If you dont know what you're doing I would leave limewire alone. Twice I have got bad viruses on my PC from limewire files - the last one was so bad I had to throw the computer away and buy a new one. Also it is illegal - not that people care. I would never use it again xx

OK - big deep breaths here.
Limewire is NOT illegal - only sharing of copyrighted material... although having said that, few have EVER been caught ...much to the music industries disgust :)
Virus - there are viruses, but no more than anywhere else on the net - the big difference here is that they CANNOT simply download themselves to your PC - you would have to download them and open them.
How to avoid infections? - common sense. Almost all the viruses are easy to spot - use the file-size as the best gauge. Also, scan after downloading as you should with anything you download of the net normally.
And NO, other Limewire users CANNOT simply hack into your system via the application.
Last piece of advice - if you can use Limewire Pro, do so, as there are more features and better share speeds - can email you a copy if you like :)

Its legal to use Limewire as long as you don't share or download copyright matteral. There is a risk that someone could access your PC or you get a virus from downloading an infected file. So as long as you can every thing you download and have a good firewall then its prity save.

dont worry about all the scare stories you read on here.....limewire is legal to use ...BUT it is illegal to download/upload copyrighted items .....but it is very very unlikely any thing will happen if you accidently do ...as long as you dont download thousands and thousands of copyrighted movies/songs etc ....
Now is limewire safe ? - yes as long as you follow simple precautions .......there are many viruses etc disguised as songs/movies/programmes etc .....always scan every individual download with an uptodate virus scanner ....if it shows a virus in the download ...delete it immediately .......I have used Limewire for over two years and NEVER been infected ....

Okay ... now before you use it, delete it. Some have been lucky and have never had problems with it, nearly every person I know HAS had problems with it, most having to reformat their machines due to embedded viruses.
DO NOT USE IT ... I do not say this because it is illegal, but because of the hassles that you WILL have in time.
