You are thinking of the Owl.
The owl has been depicted in literature and fables as "Wise" because of the Patience he displays while watching his prey and waiting.
He was used as an example for children "to be seen and not heard".
They were also known as "Witch's Familiars"...not pets exactly, more like companions to witches.
Probably the most well known Witch Familiar Owl is "Hedwig", Harry Potter's owl. The character of Hedwig is female, but Males were used in the filming...Female Snowy Owls have dark bars across their plumage. Only the Males are pure white.

Definitely not an owl. Owls are not wise, they are incredibly stupid. The European Eagle Owl is the biggest owl in the world and even that only has a brain about the size of a baked bean.
If you are looking for a wise evening bird, look for a vulture asleep, Vultures are very intelligent.
