Possibly. Are you talking about the child on BBC1 this morning? She might be upset but are her parents exploiting her and her situation a little? At the end of the day she didn't get into the school because her parents registered her LATE. Surely it's her parents fault...

Yes. if the child is living and can think: depression can be passed down from parent to child, since it learns what it see's, If it only has an out look from a deppressed adult then the child will think this is normal behavoiur. If the child is kept in all the time then naturally this child will be depressed. My wife is a Head teacher and she see's a lot of Children under the age of 10, with clinical depression. since the parents either live in a situation that does not help, (drugs and alchol) or some one parent families, that have problems that would give a child before it is born depression. This social way of life with some having all they could dream of,and others not even having food or clothing, naturaly sensitive children suffer. We have to give a good inviroment, mentally and stable to have somewhere normal children. This life now is so hard for parents to bring up a child. so costly, you have to work all hours to provide, unyet you have to be with them to bring them up as near normal as possable. A catch22 for most normal households

Yes, a four year old can suffer from depression. The child doesn't have the words knowledge yet to express how he/she feels but the signs are being withdrawn, not wanting to play with his/her favorite toys, getting upset about the least little thing and crying, not wanting to eat, not wanting to be with friends.

I wish you the best if you have a 4 year old who might be depressed.

Just an opinion but I think they are quite capable of showing typical depressive symptoms, but I don't believe they have yet developed the intellectual structure for those sypmtoms to be caused by depression. In the case of the young girl on BBC this morning I think it more likey she is suffering from Attention Deficit Disorder. Cynically, one could say the parents are likely to have brought this on, not doubt by talking about her, in front of her, all the time, making her believe that she is the centre of attention. Very judgemental of me, I know, but without that , no-one would have opinions.

Yes. Definatley. When we are young and un able to express ourselves through words, we still feel things, and because we dont express them, we cant express them, so as we get older all the surpressed feelings build up and blow and something bad happens for it all to blow up or you could be abit mad in the head, insecure or whatever. but we are born with feelings. We instictivlly pick up on peoples emotions, ESPECIALLY when we are young.

But depressed may be a bit extreme for a 4yr old, but dont ever underestimate what and how much toddlers feel, they are far more cued up on peoples emotions that we think or even would like to acknowledge. Feelings are born when we take our first breath.

Yes. Even babies can show signs of depression. It probably will not be a lasting effect like in adults, but tramatic experiences can cause children to become depressed and withdrawn. Think like a child...a tramatic experience can be something as uninvolved as seeing something disturbing on television.

Some throries are that depression is a chemical imbalance, hence medication that contains seratonin. So I believe that although a four year old may be to young to understand, it can juts be chemical.
