Both father and mother need to spend time with child, at least 1 hour in a day. The child needs:
1.Story telling.
2.Evening out going and mixing with other children ,may be in park nearby.
3.Timely food and water, bathing with massage.
4.Listening good music.
5. Playing with building blocks.

That is a temper tantrum. Sometimes kids want attention, give him some attention. At his age, he is trying to establish the sense of security. He should secure of your love and your husband's. Why don't you bring him with you even once a month and spend quality time with his father. That way, he will know that the dad loves him. And then your husband should communicate too with him, like writing letters that you'll read to him when you come from Chennai or small gifts from him for the kid, with his handwriting expressing love for him.

All kids misbehave for one reason and one reason only. They want attention. He is craving attention from you. I'm sure he gets it when he starts banging his head.... kids dont care if its negative attention or not.. the bottom line is they want the attention and if they arent just getting it for being themselves and being loved-- then they are going to act out and be naughty because that will always get them attention of some sort from the people they are craving it from.

Sounds like he's angre and/or frustrated and doesn't know how to express his feelings.
Try giving him another way to work out his frustrations. Give him something to bang on, such as a pot and spoon or a hammer and pegs toy. Distract him with something else, when he starts head banging.

From what I understand this is normal, especially for boys. My son did it and eventually outgrew it.
