First of all, do not, for the love of god, pay attention to that one person who said "preferable to leave them outside all day" that is not a good answer at all! It all depends on the habits of your dog as to where it is safe to leave it in your home. If your dog has destructive issues, it is best to limit its access to all parts of your home, for example, use baby gates to keep it in the basement, kitchen, or even just downstairs. I do not know how your house's layout so you will have to establish what is better for you in that respect. Make sure it has access to food, water, and plenty of toys at all times no matter where you keep it. If your dog is trustworthy and non destructive, let it have full run of the house, this can be no problem with a dog if it is very well behaved. If you have issues with it being nervous at all when you leave, try turning on a radio or the television for it, not too loud as to annoy the dog, but just so that it feels like it has some company. If your dog has issues holding its bladder when you are gone to work, it would be best to invest in some pee-pads to put down in one area so that it has somewhere to releive itself while you are gone. I hope this helps!

Dogs can become extremely bored when left alone all day. It is when they are bored that they tend to start destroying your home or your garden. Your dog should preferably be left outside, in a secure section of your garden, with enough room to exercise and release built-up energy. Make sure that your dog has enough food and water, and a cool and comfortable resting spot. Toys are essential to keep them occupied. Perhaps a second "back-up" bowl of water can be placed in a different area of the garden, just incase your pup decides to turn one of the bowls over. (It happens!) If the dog is still a puppy, make sure the area you leave it in is safe from bits and pieces it may try to swallow, and be prepared for lots of "landmines".

I have one dog and the same problem! I now leave a frozen bone out every other day which keeps her amused for hours. I also make sure she has plenty of water and rotate her favourite toys because they then become new and interesting. Dogs love to investigate...so make their garden interesting and safe! They will then spend more time playing and less time fretting!

Dear TG79*****
I'd hire a couple of dogs on heat and let him have a ball****????
no seriously though as long as he has a bowl of food, a bowl of fresh water, a couple of things/toys etc to chew, a nice garden to dig holes in, what more could he ask for???? Definately a loving caring owner when they return home, because rest assured he'll be waiting for you!!!! luv peppa-anne**

Luckily my dog goes to his grandma's for the day and she watches him outside. But if it's a rainy icky day and he has to stay here when we're both working, he's crated until hubby gets home from work. But he's used to the routine.

our dog gets a plastic drink bottle with some biscuits or a bone in it. he rolls it around and eventually works out how to get it out. we make a really huge fuss of him when we get home, so that's a bit of a reward. he has lots of toys and thinks he is allowed to chew and play with. also you can hide bones etc (outside obviously) for him to "hunt".
