Originally, Pentecost ["Festival of the Weeks"] was an agricultural festival and a Jewish feast of thanksgiving for the firstfruits, marking the start of the wheat harvest. This harvest lasted for seven weeks [49 days] hence "pente" means 50 days.

Traditionally, Jewish rabbis also associated Pentecost with their remembrance of the Law given by God to Moses on Mount Sinai. Apparently, the transformation from the Jewish feast to a Christian festival was related to the belief that the gift of the Holy Spirit to the disciples of Jesus Christ--after the death, Resurrection, and Ascension of JC--was the firstfruits of the new dispensation that fulfilled and succeeded the old dispensation of the Law, and it marks the beginning of the Christian church's mission to the world.

Peace be with you.

Read Acts 2. People were there from all over. The Holy Spirit was given to people and gave them the supernatural ability to speak in other languages to share the gosel with people from all over who had come to Jerusalem for the feast of Pentecost.

Even though Christianity calls it "Pentecost", it was actually 50 days after the first Sabbath after Passover, making that day a holy day called "Shavu'ot", aka The Feast of First Fruits.

As described in Leviticus 23, it is a holy day for Israelites to come before God in the place where He places His Name. In those days it was the Second Temple on the Temple Mount. So the apostles gathered together with many other Jews to observe one of God's holy days.

According to Acts chapter 2, they were gathered in the "Upper Room". The Temple had different areas for different people. Gentiles had the outer court, women had a court of their own, and the highest court closest to the Temple itself, the Men's court, also called the Upper Room.

Now as they were gathered together to observe Shavu'ot, God's breath came down into the court. This was known as two things, the Holy Spirit and the Pillar of Cloud. The same Pillar of Cloud that held back the entire Egyptian army to allow Moses and Israel to leave Egypt came down in the Temple at Shavu'ot. This Pillar of Cloud is what many called the Breath of God, or the Holy Spirit.

And since the Holy Spirit is a messenger, tongues of flame appeared on the heads of many. This was the anointing of the Holy Spirit. And these men got up with joy and started to celebrate. When they came out of the Men's court and into the Outer court or the Gentile's court, many different people saw this.

Then those from the Men's court started to speak in tongues. This wasn't a garbled, unknown language, in fact the blessing of spekaing in tongues is the blessing of speaking in a different known language without prior learning.

Those who were standing in the Gentile court weren't hearing strange sounds, but were hearing their own native languages from these men who appeared drunk.

Acts 2:6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.

There's our proof - speaking in tongues is the blessing of being able to speaking in another Known language, not some garbled gobbly-speak.

Now, as to who was there. We know the apostles were there, and so where most of the Jewish nation because they were all observing Shavu'ot (Lev 23:15-21). No doubt Romans were there to police the crowds.

Hope this helps in some way.
