Atheists were sent to Gulags and concentration camps by Stalin and Hitler along with everyone else. The third Reich targetted atheists and classed them alongside Jews as 'degenerates', many atheists were exterminated by Hitler. Stalin saw anything that represented a potential rival to his monopoly on power as a threat, this included any religous organisations including the Orthodox church.

The concentration camp was first invented by the British in South Africa in the 19th Century. During that time in British history the overwhelming majority of British citizens were god-fearing religous believers.

Religous sectarianism has been responsible for the deaths of up to 600,000 Iraqi's in the past 4 years.

Since the second World war ended, belief in god amongst Europeans has plumeted, the only war that has taken place in Europe since the 1940's was a religous war between muslims and Christians in Yugoslavia.
Religous belief in Europe is increasingly in decline and with it, so far, has come peace.
In fact the only threat to Europe at this time, aside from global warming, is radical Islam.

Looking at those few pieces of evidence it doesn't seem that a lack of belief, is particulalrly relevant to oppression and cruelty.

It should be noted that Russian Jews backed the revolution against the Czars and the formation of the socialist state. A primed example of why God's followers should not be involved in human politics, as you cannot be sure the direction it may had in.

If Christians are so very enlightened, why did Christians create the KKK?
People aren't bad because of their religion. Just coincidences.

Your question is unnecessarily combative. We could all list disgustingly large collection of atrocities perpetrated by believers and atheists throughout history. I'm grateful I don't know anyone who would condone them now.

Enjoy your day.

Atheism is not very enlightened. Its just another way of explaining the un-explainable.

For example, suppose we encouter a situation, say X, that no-one can explain, e.g. what is the meaning of life, spirits, creation of universe, etc.

The atheist will explain it as follows,
"Whatever that cause X to happen, it ain't god."

The non-atheist will explain it as follows,
"X is caused by god."

The agnostic will explain it as follows,
"Something caused X, it might or might not be god."

I agree with Ali. However I might add that we Asatruar have a concept called 'causality'. So we might say something along the lines of "Did you stand in front of X, you dumb@$$??"
