Well, I guess it all depends where you are. In some cultures it is considered impolite. However, do you know that the smell of food affects the taste? Olfactory nerves in our nose sends signals that tell our brain that this food should be tasty because it smells good or that food is yech because it smells yuck. If you really want to smell your food I recommend you do it in an inconspicuous manner. That should be safe without hurting anyone's sensibilities. The same goes for burping though, although in certain cultures a guest NOT burping after eating a meal served by the host is considered RUDE.

It depends if you make a face or vomit after you smell it. I often smell my food, and most of the time you can't help,it especially if it has a strong flavour. Also, I wouldn't put my nose right up to the plate.

No, not unless you turn your nose up after doing so...lot's of people smell food and offer a smile and a congratulatory "Mmmmm" afterwards. But, if you were to be offered something to eat out of the kindness of someone's heart and turn it down after sniffing it, you oughta have your azz kicked!

Yeah.. Unless its wine...

But again, you could always make a lil exagerated noise as you smell it, and then proclaim that it smells wonderful.. As if you were doing it just for the compliment..

If it stinks though, you are in trouble.. Either you'll gag on it, or they'll think you are mocking them..

Lets looks at it this way....Isn't it worse to taste the food while preparing it? Just make sure you don't stick your nose right into the plate ,I agree with most just follow the "slight sniff" with a mmmmmm SMELLS LOVELY !!!!and you done.

I would think it could be seen as being improper eventhough its in human nature to inspect our food before we consume it, after all its what animals have been doing for centuries. I suppose if you do smell it before you eat it, try not to be obvious about it.

Depends how you do it....if you sniff loudly and suspiciously with your nose close to the plate Im sure that wouldnt go down very well....however if you gently waft the scent up to your nose with your hand, inhale gently and smile and say thankyou Im sure that would be well received.

Bon Appetite!

Kind of. It just means that you are saying that the food placed in front of you is weird and does not look like food at all.

Some people think so. The trick is to make it look like you are trying to absorb the aroma... don't have a scrunched face.... pretend like you are sniffing a flower or something. :D
