The 400D is an entry level model and the 30D is semi-pro. The 400D might have dust reductions and an extra 2 mega-pixels, but the 30D blows it out of the water in every other respect:

* better build quality (have you held these cameras??)
* better ergonomics (decent grip, faster acces to important controls)
* more features (spot metering, etc.)

If you're in doubt, perhaps the 20D is your camera. Places like B&H still have them in stock for around $1000 - midway between the 400D and 30D.

I was choosing between that two models when the 400D became available. I finally got my hand on the 30D and I am glad I did. Its a much better build camera.
