After my experience of driving to work today I felt compelled to post a question regarding old people driving! Before I get slated - I hold the elderly in the utmost respect and would never normally disrespect them but after suffering a near break down this morning here goes!
He pulls out in front of me doing a handbrake turn doing about 40 - then proceeds to drive at 21mph the whole way along a back road - then turns left across a massively busy main road - but decides to stop in the middle of his turn whilst hes safely after reaching the other side of the road - leaving ME stranded on the wrong side with traffic tearing up the lane - I could go on - but Id honestly never finish it - but I have to say - is it safe to have drivers like this guy on the road? When I DID get to overtake I looked at him and he was about 90 and in no fit state to be in control of a car! Lets face it you need to have quick reflexs in the event of emergencies when driving! opinions please!

i started to wonder why you were saying kerb crawler lol. i thought the dvla (are they the same in ireland), made the elderly take a new test age 70, to see if they are fit enough to drive, they should one every 3 years after the age of 70 anyway inmy view!

Sorry you got so harassed this morning. I think it is difficult to start classifying drivers in this way. Anybody who drives without concern for other road users is a danger. The fact is that young drivers have more accidents than older more mature drivers and it therefore right that efforts to reduce accidents should be concentrated on those drivers. Having said that I do think that there is a bit of problem with older drivers in that it is left to them to advise the DVLC when the believe they are not longer fit to drive (I am 72 by the way). I am not suggesting a full driving test at a certain age but it may be an idea for drivers over 75 should either have to go to there nearest police station and get an officer to go round the block with them just to check that they can see and control the car or have their reflexes checked on a machine made for that purpose. I have recently check my reflexes and I am well within the normal human range and even slightly better than average

Old peoples driving does my head right in, they shouldn't be on the road they may not have had a accident but they have caused thousands, they should bring the age limit down for the test re-take don't know what it is now but its definitely to old. Kerb crawlers means something different from where I am from, it means people in cars looking for prostitutes.

A person of sixty may not be fit to drive, while a person of ninety may be a perfectly good driver. You get crap drivers in all age groups. Middle age and older drivers are much safer than young drivers. Thats why insurance companies charge them (young drivers) so much for their policies. I`m 63 years old, I hav`nt had an accident that was my fault for over 20 years. I probably pay about one tenth for my insurance than a young person does. I take pride in my driving, from a safety point of view, and I am courteous to other road users. Also I dont lose my temper when someone else does something stupid. You should try that.

Ha Ha i understand what your saying!! I think they shouldnt be allowed to drive after a certain age to be honest. When you see some nutter driving down the wrong way down the motorway on the news its usually an old biddy!! I reckon boy racers etc get a hard time because they knowingly drive like utter prats and cause loads of accidents???

I dont drive myself so what do i know ?? Ha Ha

Some would say that in the case of the crossing lanes of traffic, you should have ensured you were clear to make the crossing. Driving like many things relies on other people being responsible and driving safely. Many times I have approached roundabouts, junctions etc and found myself in harms way because other drivers are either not following the highway code or are just completelt tearing up the rule book and making it up as they go.

I can see in some near future that a few things may happen,

1. Age for drivers to be increased.
2. Ban on drivers below a certain age driving on motorways.
3. Drivers below or above a certain age retaking a test on 2 or 5 yearly cycle.
4. Medical test being compulsory either for people above a certain or for everyone in general.

Any 'bad' driver frustrates or incences you, that in it self can impair your driving ability, especially if you, has happened to me, have sat behind a 'sporty' car driven at 20 mph for nearly 5 miles, when an overtaking spot becomes available the old dear decides that its her road and responds to me trying to overtake by putting her foot down.

We just have to accept that there are people on our roads today, no matter what country you drive in that are just unsafe to drive, whether that is because of an inability to drive on medical grounds or just shear disrespect for other road users.

sad fact, just wish yourself away to a nice calm spot and carry on, curse to your hearts content when you get to your destination, hopefully you'll arrive there in one peice and wont get to follow them on your way home.
;-)

this is a hard question to answer if you are 90 and perfictly healthy would you your car taken of you because the law said so come on im 26 and love to drive till i die or untill my doctor says im not allowed to drive (hint) doctor

is transport free for elderly no
do you want your car when you are 90 yes because you do not want to walk to the shop 3mls because the law said you are to old to drive you would say i cant walk then blar blar

the law would have to pay someone to deliver food to the house and have a driver for the old because they cant drive to the hospital becasue their hip hurts after walking for 5 minutes so what do you think now

always think of the big picture what if then ask the question
we all have opoinions and we do need to express our feelings

I'm not saying his actions were right, but why were you driving so close to him that you had to brake suddenly and why did you follow his manouvre across the road when you could obviously not ascertain that you had time and space to do so safely? Sounds to me you let your emotions rule your head and your own driving was affected too.
