Think of the energy that would be saved.

Advantages include a financial saving (although this probably will not show in our council tax bills!)

Astronomers will have dark skies.

Environmental advantages by saving energy.

Perhaps a disadvantage would be personal safety to anyone walking about in the early morning hours?

Rapists, robbers! Crikey! where do you people live?

yes, some areas may have a problem with burglaries, but isn't that the problem of the home owner not keeping security up to date?

Rapists....not where I live.

As for motorists not seeing fallen trees or obstacles. OMG! Do you drive with your headlights turned off? :D Not every road is lit by streetlights.

There is a simple answer. Turn off every other light, or, better still turn off two, have one on, turn off two etc.

Initially there would be a cost of putting in two wiring circuits but this would eventually recoup itself.

That said the saving would be insignificantly small in that that is achievable by improvements in efficiency of generation, lighting and transmission systems.

Whilst we are energy hungry and present methods of generation are polluting - the answers are out there to turn it all around. Changing from a coal fired generator to a gas one would halve the pollution and changing to nuclear, or alternative power sources would wipe it out.

The answers you have received though suggest a further possibility - getting people to get a real appreciation of the risks of daily life! If people would only look beyond their irrational fear and quantify the real dangers they would see that the risks of rape, burglary and murder are tiny. They are far more likely to die in an accident in the home. So perhaps they would gain enough confidence to switch off some lights themselves!!!

Great Idea.

We have no street lights here and if street lights were turned off in Town there would be less need for the Town based thieves to come out here and steal things, which would reduce our insurance premiums.

Low energy high efficiency bulbs and proper installations with reflectors etc are a better answer.

Why have street lights at all? All the better to see the moonlight and stars, and on very dark nights, you can use a flash light or LED keychain light so you can see your way to your car or the front door. You can install a motion-sensing light on a timer which will come on when you enter your driveway and walk up to your front door. Then they will automaticaly shut off after a pre-determined amount of time. I say lose the street lights! Total waste of energy and add to light pollution.

Because all the power plants produce for peaks during the day and the grid doesn't have batteries, at night there is plenty of extra energy available.

The better idea would be to somehow use the night energy, for example charge up batteries that run street lights or cars or something...

Fab idea! That used to happen in rural areas and it certainly meant most people got home by then!!
Disadvantages are parents having to go out at 3 am to collect offspring from nightclubs instead of letting them get taxis home.. small price to pay for environment.

Disadvantage to motorists. They won't see things such as sudden turns, or fallen tree branches, or night time animals such as deer and raccoons coming closer to the streets because there aren't any lights to scare them away.

Disadvantage to people getting robbed, now the burglars don't have to hide to lurk around and steal stuff.

thats a good idea in theory, may not work so well in practice though because so many people live 24hr lifestyles now, a good idea would be sensors so the lights only go on when and if needed.
