You press the sleep button and the TV will turn off in 30 minutes or whatever it is set for. You press it when you feel like your eyes are getting droopy and you might fall asleep. Then your TV doesn't stay on all night.

my husband can't get to sleep unless the tv's on so he sets the timer with the sleep button so that it will turn off a little after he falls asleep

so you can fall asleep while watching tv and you set it for a time to shut off.usually in 30 minute increments.i use mine all the time

its for setting the timer on say like 5-100 mins it will go off by itself thats for when you go out

well you set it for a certain amount of time and your TV will automatically go off at that time.. so it is to turn your TV off at a certain time..
