...I had chicken pad thai, couldnt eat it all so put it back in the container and left it at room temperature all night.
Ive brought it to the office with me to have at lunch time- but is it safe to reheat in microwave? I thought it was ok as long as it hadnt been in the fridge- but is this right? Already got a nasty cold, dont want to poison myself as well.
Thanks :-)

You are not going to die. You may get a stomachache at the very least, but as a rule of thumb for the future.... You should refrigerate anything that has ingredients that should be refrigerated before cooking. If left out, the food can sour and cause bacteria that can make you sick ie throwing up or diarrhea.

any kind of meat leftovers need to be refrigerated, and the quicker the better. if you let it cool slowly you run the risk of food poisoning, as it is between hot and cold that the growth of nastiesoccurs. Put all leftovers straight into the fridge so that it can cool as fast as possible. don't leave it out to cool on the bench before you put it into the refrigerator. even with non-meat products this is a good rule. throw out your lunch and get something that won't make you sick

You're flirting with salmonella or staph.
Sam-the bacteria secrete a toxin that is not destroyed by heat,so heating the food makes no difference-the poison is still in there. You may not realize when you get poisoned because the incubation period is 24-48 hours after consuming the bad food.
Better safe than puking and squirting.

I always thought that leftovers should always be kept in the fridge. You can reheat food if it has been kept in the fridge, I wouldn't eat anything that was left out all night, I'm sure thats what causes the bacteria.

You should always put leftovers (esp chicken) in the fridge, as it will slow down the growth of bacteria. Leaving it at room temperature overnight was not wise - it will be starting the process of going off by now.
Chuck it away.

I love cold take-away food the next day. I have never got ill and I always leave it out with a tea towel over it and then re-heat it in the microwave. Yum yum. Sometimes I don't even re-heat it. Cold chicken fried rice is just delicious.

The rule is that food that is going into the freezer should be allowed to cool first. If it has been on the side it should be OK, however, it is Chicken which as others have noted can be dodgy.
Caution is advised!

You'll be getting an extra helping of bacteria if you do eat it! By now there are millions of them in the food as it wasn't refridgerated. Throw it away and get yourself a sandwich for lunch!
