I mean you can nearly run over a bird before you scare it off but you cant get within 30 feet of a bird on foot before it flies away. Why is this?

and its not because you are going faster, I was at a stop light and there were birds right there on the curb and cars were coming up and they werent flying away, I was even able to completely drive over one and it didnt move, same with his friends, they linger around cars but at site of a person they fly off before you can get anywhere close to them. Adn its not because they cars werent moving very fast. I drive down the street and Ill drove right by them and they dont fly away, they kind of hop out of the cars way but they arent scared of the car.

This might not help you with your question but...Birds get very used to cars being around them and build up a relaxed Resistance from them. (If they only knew!LOL) and since cars don't look like something that eat's them, you can just about run over the top of them. Pigeons are the worst because they hang around people and become used to us, knowing that moving a few wing flaps away is a safe distant. Here's some trivia for you, being a falconer and working with my brother who was a master falconer, when trapping birds of prey, two people can walk up to a certain point, drop a trap and if one person walks away....it's safe to come down to the trap because, to a bird, two minus one is zero. have fun! :)

Because birds don't know that the car is going to keep on coming towards them, they are already in flight mode. People have the knowledge, you hope, that the car is going to hit them if they don't move.

They don't see cars as a threat I guess. There was a Red Tailed Hawk having lunch by the side of the road last weekend. We moved out a bit, so as to not side swipe it, but it didn't move away from lunch!
