It is *not* polydactyly as far as I can tell- he has normal paws and claws (5 'fingers' on each front paw, 4 on each back paw, one normal claw per finger) except for the claws growing out through his paw pads! He is not infected, does not seem to be in pain, but I am concerned that they may become infected or cause pain later. Does anyone have any experience with this?

*Edit: I am not referring to the dewclaw, nor do I mean he has extra toes (polydactyly). I am taking him to be vaccinated this weekend, I plan to ask the vet about it then- I was just hoping to hear from someone who has seen this anomaly before. Maybe my little guy is the first... 0_o

If he's not in any CURRENT pain, I'd say your little kitten has been chosen as a test subject in evolution. :) Maybe he'll grow up into a slightly more successful cat than his ther others in his litter, mate with a fine feline female, and pass his extra claw on to HIS kittens and start a new line of cats.

But if it turns out to be more harmful for the cat later in life, just go and get rid of it. :P

This second claw your talking about is called a DEW CLAW and although it is not a problem as far as physical issues ,and the cat could live the rest of it's life with it...I would suggest having it removed for one reason....it your cat has the unfortunate chance to have it ripped off, it will be pain full and you have that infection thing going on due to scratching on the litter box and what not and that's just a problem and a vet bill waiting to happen. Hope this information helps you. :) I just pulled this back to edit..I made the mistake in reading your question wrong. I didn't understand about the toe growing out from the foot. The dew claw grows from the side and usually higher that the rest of the toe pads. Sorry.

you have a cat that has polydactlism (state of having supernumerary feet) in different words you have a cat that has distinctive feet on the front and hind feet. it somewhat is a genetic recurrence that occurs needless to say. POLY meaning 5 are the traditional toe count huge variety for the fore feet of a typical tom cat and four on the rear feet. as long as your cat is wholesome, love him and take stable care of him, ok.

When it doubt, get it checked out by a vet. The vet knows what is best for the kitty.

When you take him to the vet to get his shots, then ask them about it. If it needs to be removed, I'd just have them do it when you have him neutered since he'll already be under the anesthesia.
