Usually it is to borrow books, but I gather times have changed and you can also borrow audio visual stuff and learn how to source information from the net.

All the material will be catalogued, including audiovisual items, and you can usually check the catalogue on a computer to see what the library has, and whether it's available for loan right now. Books are usually (but not always) classified by the Dewey Decimal System under these basic categories:
000 Generalities (includes computing)
100 Philosophy and Psychology
200 Religion
300 Social Science (including sociology, criminology and law)
400 Language and linguistics
500 Natural Science and Mathematics
600 Technology (Applied Sciences - including business and marketing)
700 Arts
800 Literature (both English and foreign language)
900 Geography and History
The catalogue will give you a precise classmark (e.g. 302.542) which is usually followed by a the first three letters of the author's name (I'm looking at a sociology book right now by a guy called David Downes, so the whole classmark is 302.542 DOW).
If in doubt, ask! The staff are there to help.

well...
u have to join first. they will take ur address and may be a few references, then they will give u card.
in some places, u need the long number on the card to log in to the computer. some libraries offer free minutes (45, 30, 60 etc..) on the compter. or you could use a guest card if u hven't joined.
u can take books, magasines, CDs, DVDs, CD ROMs, educationl stuff, maps, atlases, guineess books, childrens stuff, etc... but u definetely need a card for this. these are for loan and u won't hve to pay for books. they might charge u CDs, DVDs, CD ROMs etc..
u always hav to checkout and check-in if u r taking stuff with u. they will have record of u in the library computer. when the date to take stuff back is up, and u don't return the stuff in time, they might fine u. they probably give u about 3 weeks to keep the things. if u lose anything, they might charge u money.
you can probably print or copy in the library. always u can ask the person(s) at the desk.
