My friends dog is not drinking or eating. She says its vomit smells like motor oil. Im wondering if a dog would drink that on its own?(most dumb animals would-in theory) and/or anti freeze.
I know dogs love antifreeze. It could smell like oil if it was used and came out of a car that has a head gasket problem. And a dog would drink that no problem im sure.
She cant take it to a 24 hour vet as she lives in countryville tx, usa... there isnt one around. Ive heard of things removing poison like charcoal, would giving the dog some of this, OR ANYTHING else help draw the poison? What about snaking a tube and forcing water? im sure IV is better...
I know there isnt much she can do.. at this point..but figured why not ask if there are any "home remedy" or natural solutions to this IF you get it quick enough. Im sure this dogs fate is sealed, but itd be good to know, as this seems to be a trend this year.
Thanks

What should be done if an animal is poisoned? (And you cannot contact your local veterinarian first!)
Immediately call the ASPCA APCC (888-426-4435); a $50 consultation fee may apply.
Be ready to provide:
Your name, address, and phone number
Information concerning the exposure (the amount of agent, the time since exposure, etc.)
The species, breed, age, sex, weight and number of animals involved.
The agent your animal(s) has been exposed to, if known.
The problems your animal(s) is experiencing.
When the 888 number is used, your credit card number will likely be required in addition to the above information. (If the agent is part of the Animal Product Safety Service, the consultation is at no cost to you.)

If the poison was recently ingested you could give the dog some hydrogen peroxide- it will make the dog vomit- which you said it already is but that may help to remove the poisons. The charcoal you are talking about is activated charcoal and I am guessing she doesn't have any of that laying around and giving this without knowing if it is a poison or what the poison is can actually make matters worse, because the poison will still be in the body and may release toxins as it passes through the digestive track. Do not try to tube the dog- you may end up in her lungs making matters worse use the peroxide instead. I know the dog is sick but try to keep her hydrated and get her to a vet as soon as it is possible.
Good Luck!!!

The following site is an on-line Vet question site .... it's a 24/7 staffed site .... there's a very small fee involved to get your answer. In your friend's situation, I would definitely give it a try ASAP:

Other than that, all I can offer is that Hydrogen Peroxide will make a dog vomit up poison. That was advice I received from an ER vet when my dog noshed on a bunch of poison mushrooms ... but I don't know if it will work with Anti-Freeze.
My heart goes out to the dog and it's owner; I'll keep them in my thoughts and prayers.

If the only proof of poisoning is that the vomit looks and even smells like motor oil, it could be that the dog has gastrointestinal bleeding possibly from an ulcer & this is dead partally digensted blood. In this case inducing more vomiting is just gonna agravate things - be sitting on the vets doorstep when he opens in the AM.

Yes dogs will drink oil or antifreeze. You can use Syrup of Ipecac to make a dog vomit just as you can if people swallow a poison. However, you have to do it fairly quickly.

there is also a chance the dog ate something that is stuck in its intestinal track. this recently happened to my cat. she had to stay at the vets until she passed it. if you cant get the dog to a vet tonight i suggest taking it there first thing in the morning. that way they can give him an IV and figure out exactly what the problem is.

Past experience with boxer. Call all vets close by most but not all will answer the phone and meet you at the office. Not much time left.

well, she can't go to the vet yet, but she must call the vet and ask for first aid tips. Or at least call a human doctor and ask what should be done for a child and do the same.
