go for an older japanese car (such as camry, accord, maxima).
They're the most reliable cars on the road...and last for quite a while if you take car of it.
I personally have a '97 corolla with close to 120K...and I LOVE it :)

In Singapore, with US $5000, may be a good bicycle, or a reasonable motorbike. Motor car? Dream on.
