The Catholic Church believes that "Only God forgives sin."

When a penitent person asks God for forgiveness, his (or her) sins are immediately forgiven.

Catholics also believe that when someone sins they not only hurt their relationship with God, they also injure the entire church, the body of Christ.

The Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation with a priest ordained in the name Jesus Christ not only reconciles the sinner to God but with the entire church, including you and me.

The Bible also tells us to confess our sins to others:

James 5:16 - Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The fervent prayer of a righteous person is very powerful.

Acts 19:18 - Many of those who had become believers came forward and openly acknowledged their former practices.

Matthew 3:5-6 - At that time Jerusalem, all Judea, and the whole region around the Jordan were going out to him (John the Baptist) and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River as they acknowledged their sins.

Mark 1:5 - People of the whole Judean countryside and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem were going out to him (John the Baptist) and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River as they acknowledged their sins.

1 Timothy 6:12 - Compete well for the faith. Lay hold of eternal life, to which you were called when you made the noble confession in the presence of many witnesses.

1 John 1:9 - If we acknowledge our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from every wrongdoing.

Numbers 5:6-7 - "Tell the Israelites: If a man (or a woman) commits a fault against his fellow man and wrongs him, thus breaking faith with the LORD, he shall confess the wrong he has done, restore his ill-gotten goods in full, and in addition give one fifth of their value to the one he has wronged."

Nehemiah 9:2 - Those of Israelite descent separated themselves from all who were of foreign extraction, then stood forward and confessed their sins and the guilty deeds of their fathers.

Sirach 4:26 - Be not ashamed to acknowledge your guilt, but of your ignorance rather be ashamed.

With love in Christ.

Only if you have committed mortal sins, which means you have completely cut yourself off from God.
Another criteria for confession is you must be Catholic or Orthodox.
Committing venial sins does not need to be taken to the confessional, but doing so once a month is a beautiful devotion that leads to a deeper relationship with Jesus.

It is redundant for Protestants to go to confession since most of them have abolished the priesthood, and accept Martin Luther's opinions regarding justification by faith alone, a doctrine that is not in the bible. Instead, they "confess" to a minister or a psychologist, but don't get their sins absolved by the authority given to the Church.

i tell you this the Bible says the only way to the father is through the Son who is Jesus Christ the Bible didn't say the only way to the father is through your local priest.
If you Have sinned and need to confess don't you wait drop to your knees now and ask our Father god in the Name of Jesus please forgive for i have sinned he knows if your heart is sincere if we were to wait until we went to go some place to confess what if we were killed before we got there and Our God is a Loving God he will Forgive you if you are sincere in your asking Jesus will make us a new person when we accept him in our life we can go strait to him he is the only one who can get us in to heaven not all the preacher or priest or pastors in the world can get us in to heaven only Jesus Christ can do that your name must be written in the Lambs book of life but if we walk away from our lord our name can be erased from that book as easy as it went in Jesus will never leave us or forsake us but we can leave him and forsake him but for heavens sake why would anyone want to do do that.

Confession is a Catholic practice that has no grounds in the word of God. Even the Catholic Bibles state that there is only one mediator between God and men and that's the man Christ Jesus. -1 Tim 2:5

How can we confess to men? Does not God want us to confess to God? Who can take away our sins but Jesus?

Jesus is the mediator between us and GOD the father. He alone intercedes on our behalf. I think confessing are sins/mistakes helps us to realize our imperfect nature but confession to man isn't the giving us forgiveness.

ok Sweetheart, it extremely is an answer from a Catholic of 40 years. Sounds to me like all of the different solutions you have gotten so an prolonged way are from non Catholics. The means via which God forgives sins after baptism is confession: "If we confess our sins, he's committed and merely, and could forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (a million John a million:9). Minor or venial sins could be confessed directly to God, yet for grave or mortal sins, which crush the non secular existence out of the soul, God has instituted a distinctive means for figuring out to purchase forgiveness—the sacrament huge-unfold popularly as confession, penance, or reconciliation. This sacrament is rooted interior the challenge God gave to Christ in his ability by way of fact the Son of guy in the international to flow and forgive sins (cf. Matt. 9:6). subsequently, the crowds who witnessed this new potential "glorified God, who had given such authority to adult males" (Matt. 9:8; observe the plural "adult males"). After his resurrection, Jesus surpassed on his challenge to forgive sins to his ministers, telling them, "by way of fact the daddy has sent me, on the different hand I deliver you. . . . get carry of the Holy Spirit. in case you forgive the sins of any, they're forgiven; in case you save the sins of any, they're retained" (John 20:21–23). by way of fact it is not any longer possible to admit all of our many on a daily basis faults, all of us be attentive to that sacramental reconciliation is needed in elementary terms for grave or mortal sins—even though it is needed, or Christ does not have commanded it.

If one is capable of being truly sorry for offending God, and one is capable of following up that perfect contrition with true repentance, than confession may not be necessary.

But why risk it?

In my opinion I don't believe it's necessary to go to confession. God knows what is in your heart and if you seek him and repent sincerely I believe you'll be fine.

It's actually not even necessary to ask god to forgive you. Just don't break the law, and don't hurt people's feelings, and you'll be okay.
