A dog must be one year of age before you can get them nutered or spayed.
Hope this helps. ^_^

My puppy was spayed at 13 weeks. The humane society insisted it was done then we could take her home from the vet. All 3 of my dogs have been pretty sick afterwards, but she did the best. The other 2 were 9 months and 4 yrs. My one complaint with having her fixed that early was that she had a very overwhelming few days - being separated from her brothers and sisters one day, spayed the next, then being in a new home the day after.

4 months at the earliest and 6 months at the latest is ideal.

I got a puppy from the Humane society that was spayed at 6 weeks, so there are vets out there that will do it at a very young age.

The age is mostly up to your vet. Many humane societies are commonly spaying and neutering at 8-10 weeks. But most vets prefer 4-6 months for males and females.

RIGHT AWAY!!! Three reasons say get your dog spayed NOW!

1. overpopulation of pets in shelters.
2. Pyometra, a disease of the uterus, which is very deadly if left untreated. It's almost like "toxic-shock syndrome" in human females. Once they take out the uterus, and clear up the infection, you're ok. If they can't get to it in time, the dog's chances of survival are very low. You should get the dog spayed young, because pyometra affects dogs that are between 5 and 7 years old.
3. breast cancer has a greater tendency to creep up on your dog later in life, if the dog is not spayed.

THREE Great reasons to get your dog spayed. If you love your dog, get it done. Please, spread the word. I just lost my dog of 7 years to pyometra. It's been 3 weeks, and the pain is still there in my heart, in my soul. You'll be a very loving person if you prevent such a tragedy from occuring. You have a responsibility for your pet's well being, and her life.

Get her spayed!

thanks, on behalf of your dog!

I depends on the siz of the animal. I have a small breed, and I got her spayed at 5 1/2 months. You can get them spayed as early as 3 months. I would do it as soon as possible to prevent the animal from going into heat.

Sorry, but I have to disagree with Junas. Having your puppy spayed earlier , and especially before her first heat cycle, greatly reduce the chances of her developing mammary cancer later in life. Shelters spay and neuter at a very early age as part of their protocol to keep the population down, and those animals do ok. Realistically, you are helping her more if you get it done before her first cycle. Smaller breed tend to hit puberty earlier than large breeds.....but I like to use 5 months as a target for both. Talk to your vet and see what he/she suggests....good luck.

Males can get neutered any time from 4 months on and females the same anytime 4 months on. Some vets will do pediatric spay/neuters which means they will do the surgery as early as 8 weeks old.

You want to get your girl spayed before she has her first heat.

It's best before the first heat. For each heat cycle you wait, the increase of cancers increase by 8%.

We got ours spayed at 4 months. Also, the younger you get it done, the less it costs (Esp with a big breed, ours was 20lbs at 4 months, and we barely met the cutoff before it would have costed about 25 dollars more).

Try and get her spayed by six months so you don't have to go through her having her period. That's very messy business.
Junas, where did you go to veterinary school? My dog was spayed at 5 months, and it's recomended they are spayed BEFORE they are 1, not after.

Perfect article that will explain it all by a vet...www.peteducation.com..Most say before or around 6 months before their first heat so you dont run into any unwanted pregnancies. Plus an unspayed dog runs health risks if you dont plan on breeding. During the heat cycle the vulva enlarges and doesnt have a well protective barrier for intrusion of bacteria and can run the risk of infections that can be deadly.
