I smoked for 13 years, but gave it up 3 years ago. I'm 5'7 and weigh 165 pounds. I use the treadmill and try to stay between 5 and 5.5 mph. I've always wanted to run. I can make it for about 1.25 miles and then I have to walk. Any suggestions?

I have been a runner for many years and have absolutely loved it. I am so glad that I made the needed effort and feel sorry for those who have not discovered the joy of it. My two siblings could never find the perseverance and they allowed themselves to get fat and lazy and one is grossly overweight and besieged by illnesses. Firstly, you know that height and weight have nothing to do with it! Neither is the fact that you used to smoke! I used to drink heavily at one time for a number of years and gained weight but decided to do everything to get healthy.
I always went running by myself initially. Do you?
The body gets used to not being disciplined and it is tough at the beginning. You have to simply ignore the body wanting to stop. Just do not heed what the body says and keep on putting one foot in front of the other. Next time you go, decide you are going to do 2 miles before stopping. Even if you do stop..... immediately make yourself start running again. After the 2 miles allow yourself to walk only as much as half a mile before making yourself run again. Make yourself run for at least another half mile, then you will have started the disciplining of the body. Next outing, increase from 2 miles to 2 1/2 miles, etc. Then you will feel strong and certain that you have mastered it. So its that easy! Congratulations on your success! I wish you good luck and good running!
