It comes from pentacost (a very old festival). 50 days after the passover (also the day Jesus was crucified), it was a very big festival and many foreigners would have been in Jeruselem that day. Anyway, the apostles were having a little get together and suddenly they were baptised in the Holy Spirit as Jesus had told them they would be, a flame appeared above their head and they ran out into the street preaching the Gospel to all of the foreigners in their own native laguage. It was a miracle because these were largely unlearned men (never learning any language but their own), and it was apparent to everyone that God had given them this ability to be able to spread the Gospel to foreign peoples (aka Gentiles). Speaking in tounges is also refered to as one of the gifts of the Spirit. Some christian sects like to say that this is proof of being baptised in the Holy Spirit. The Problem is: If no one is around to interpret the language, then it is very easy to fake it.

different people have different ways that they see "talking in tongues". Some include convulsions of the body. But I had a friend whose parents said they spoke in tongues and it was more like a prayer language to God that happened inside of them through the spirit - a private thing.
And good that you say form of communication. The apostle Paul said that speaking in tongues is a gift of the spirit, but he also says that the person who can interpret the tongues for the rest of the people is also gifted in the spirit. That's a necessary part for paul - that God's language is communicated to the people, not just displayed as how cool you are that you can speak in tongues.

I think that the majority of religions misunderstand what this is.
Talking in toungues is only used when there is a person who can translate. It is also not a ranting and raving with loud wailing but a tool of teaching.
The apostles spoke in tounues after recieving the holy spirit. But they were speaking to a group of people from many different places. Many religions were spoken there. They did not rant and rave and dance but instead taught the Gospel of Christ.
Talking in Tongues is a mirical but it is also an easily faked one.

I personally have never seen talking in tongues to be hysterical or undignified. I am sure that there are churches that are out of balance in this area.
speaking in tongues is a gift of edification. a private prayer language between you and God. There is also a formal speaking in tongues in the congregation where another member calls out in English, or whatever the common language is.
It is always orderly if it is from God, for God is order.
I have seen people slain in the spirit, and have experienced myself. Not jumping in frantic, but falling back, easy.
I have seen many healings, and many deliverance's. It is not bad, just very misunderstood.

They think it is the language of angels. I grew up in it, and when someone spoke in tongues they were suppose to be allowing the Holy Spirit to talk through them, meaning that they were saved. HOWEVER, in the bible it states that tongues is a gift, and that tongues should only be used if someone is there to tell what the speaker is saying (never once did it happen this way in my church growing up) secondly, I believe tongues to be thea bility to speak a different language while testifying for God. IOW, if you spoke Spanish and only Spanish, and I speak Engilsh and only Englis, I could be telling you about God in English, and you be hearing it in Spanish (that is one type of tongues.

First of all, we have to look to see how in the bible this is presented. The bible says in an assembly, if anyone is speaking in this language, there is to be someone else "interpreting" it. It is not to be done like some crazy free for all (as I have witnessed it), a bunch of people babbling and looking like idiots. I am a Christian, and when this happened, it scared the heck out of me. That's not what anything should do if it's of God.

Talking in tongues is supose to mean that the Holy Spirit is talking through u. I honestly would think it would want its message heard and understood if it is taking all this effort to communicate it. It honestly makes no sense why God chose an unusal form of communication since in the Old Testament he talked to people all the time and they understood him, so I don't see why now it would be different.

God did not choose this form of communication. What the church does is born of darkness. To talk in tongue is to say good things like, "Share your riches." or "All people will eventually be in heaven." This is the language that people do not understand, this is the tongue.
