I'm moving to a house in the mountains and need good high-ankle walking shoes/hiking-type boots that are water-proof. Suggestions? Thanks!

Check out Cabelas.com...I just ordered winter insulated athletic type boots that are ankle high, water proof and protect to negative 45 degrees. Wore them to Copper Mountain Ski Village in Colorado last weekend and they were comfy and warm. Cabellas has their own brand of products that are not advertised so thy are a lot cheaper but just as good as name brands like columbia.
Check them out....
Cabela's Women's Snow Runner™
Wintertime warmth with an athletic-shoe fit
$59.95

The Cabela's Women's Active Trail™ Mid Hikers look like they would do good for you too, not as insulated and a little more expensive about $90 but they are specified for hiking and 100% waterproof. Mid ankle height. Look really cute too.

It's a common misconception that has persisted since the days when soldiers came back from war with their combat boots that you need hiking boots to hike in the mountains.

The fact is that for three season hiking on trails and most off, in anything but sub zero conditions, you don't need anything more than cross training/trail running type shoes, and many are available for well under $100.00. Some popular brands include: Solomon, Montrail. La Sportiva, Keen, Merrell, Vasque.

Also, the idea that Gore-Tex is a good idea inside one's shoes is highly controversial. Many people think Gore-tex doesn't work well enough to prevent one's feet from being soaked by sweat, and that it's better just to go through the creeks, and let the shoes dry naturally, while changing your socks is a surer way of keeping your feet dry. That's assuming you don't have huge leather boots which will stay damp for days.

go to the local hiking store and check out some Montrails. They come in gortex waterproof.

now, after you go the store, try them own... go home and order them from www.sierratradingpost.com where they are 50-75% cheaper.

you can find lots of brands, but i prefer Montrail. i have found several pairs for my wife, usually $100, but as cheap as $15. it's amazing
