While I don't claim to be a gastronome, my favorite downtown restaurant is Marlowe's on the Sixteenth Street Mall. Marlowe's is a local restaurant that has a very eclectic menu that can please a wide range of tastes. I'm a vegetarian, but I frequently entertain carnivores, and Marlowe's has something for everyone.
For a great vegetarian lunch, try Taki's on Colfax.

There are a few that come to my mind...
1. Elway's Restaurant~ It is by Cherry Creek mall and has GREAT food and WINE as well!! It is the best restaurant I have ever eaten at. Their desserts are wonderful as well.
2. Sambuca~ located right downtown. They have live Jazz bands there with a super cool atmosphere, great steaks, seafood, and others...and of course, great WINE!
3. McCormicks~ This is a seafood restaurant and they have killer happy hours!
4. Dazzle~ Also a Jazz place with great happy hour, liquor and WINE! =0)
Hope this helps....I have lived here my whole life and work downtown, and just so happen to be obsessed with food and wine...so I know a thing or two!

On 16th Street Mall, STAY AWAY from Cheesecake Factory, not only because it's a chain, but because the wait is always an hour long and the food isn't all that. Instead, opt for Palomino, which is an eclectic world-fusion cafe on 16th and Arapahoe. You will also find good food at Tamayo on Larimer Square, and the Chop House on 19th and Wazee has excellent steak. Also, look for The Keg on 19th and Wazee (approximately). They have amazing shrimp cocktail and lobster tail.

My favorite place is La Fondu Very fun and yummy. I actually felt like I had enough to eat. my favorite part was the desert plate cheese cake fruit and marshmellows to dip into chocolate. mmmmmmmm yummy! We did the whole deal salad, vegi's, meat(seafood, chicken steak) then desert. It is a little pricy but well worth it. They even took a picture of our table and gave it to us before we left. I like it way better than the melting pot. use the valet around the corner because there is no parking there.
I also like The Capital Grille you really can't find a better steak anywhere in the state, and their side dishes are very, very good. I would compare it to Lowrey's in Las Vegas. make reservations as they can get pretty busy and don't bring your kids bring a date!

Two places immediately come to mind! Case Bonita dn The Buckhorn. Casa Bonita is awesome. I don't care if you have kids or not. The cliff divers are cool and even a 30 year old thinks Black Bart's Cave is ccol. The atmosphere is fun and carefree. Endless Sopapillas..need I say more? Also The Buckhorn. They serve mostly wild game, rattlesnake, alligator, elk, venison. The atmosphere is sophoistocated and the staff is knowledgeable. The prices are quite high but worth every hard earned penny!

Wahoo's Fish Taco is by far the best restaurant in LoDo! Definitely the food is what makes it great.
It has a kind of skater/snowboarder vibe.
