DON'T RUN!
If a dog approaches you in a threatening way,
1. Don't turn your back but don't stare it in the face; look slightly to one side so it knows you see it but you're not challenging it.
2. Back away.
3. If you have a belt, strap, or string, wave it; some dogs have learned to be afraid of straps, and if not, it doesn't hurt anything.
4. Talk to it in a friendly way.
But if the dog is CHARGING at you snarling, and you don't have time for a more peaceful approach, like happened to me once, you have no choice. Suddenly raise your arms high, holding the corners of your jacket if you have one, and roar. The sudden change in size and shape will confuse a dog (their vision isn't the sharpest) and the roar on top of this will startle the dog. With any luck, he'll turn and run the other way. I would only do this as a last resort though.

Every dog is different and every breed is different. But this works for the majority.
Stand your ground. Stop in your tracks and do not run (a dogs instinct is to chase a running target). Put your hands up and touch your chest. Look tall, look tough, look more in control and powerful not weak. Dogs sense weakness and fear.
Do not stare the dog in the eyes, that tells him you want to FIGHT. Look at him but not in the eyes.
All the while, plan your escape. Be contemplating how you will get away. A dog can get distracted and this is your chance to get away. Some dogs will not attack if you slowly walk backwards from him, do not turn your back on a dog.
Remember dogs if they want to kill they go for the NECK protect yours. Vivious breeds will go for the neck.
If you, look fearless and tough the dog will not mess with you. They may bark and complain but when it does not work they will walk away. Good for you though.

On a bike, dogs will chase you since you are a moving target, just like an animal running away in fear.. Your only choice is keep peddling using diversions and kick the dog if you can in the face.

Good Luck

Been there - done that! And it's a scary situation.
If you have the means (ie: get on your bike or in your car) get away! If not. well here is my own experience:
I had a friend's Great Dane come at me. He was in the house when I came through their gate, once the gate closed behind me and I was 1/2 through to the house the dog got the front door open and leaped out at me!! I pulled my arms & legs close to my body and yelled in my deepest commading voice to "Stay Down!" as he got closer I turned my body to the side and raised my leg (as if to kick him). He grabbed my boot but I got a good shot in. Otto, was a little taken aback and I had time to get back to the other side of the gate. Then my friend was outside and had him under control.
In this case - the dog did nothing wrong. I was in HIS area (the signs are posted all over that there's a Guard dog on duty) The fault lay with my friend who did not close the door properly.

depends on the dog and the situation - running is wrong - if you can get inside that is the best - get a description of the dog and call police or city by-law department

running makes you prey.. even a dog who is thinking playfully, may turn agressive if you run.. if you can call for help do so in a manly type voice - firm not frightened... dont squeel in a "girly" tone.. (even if you are a girl)
say NO firmly

if you have food - snack or whatever throw it down to distract the dog.. throw your back pack too for the same reason

You should never run from a dog that is following you unless they attack. If you are walking along and a dog starts to follow you and growl or threaten you then walk quickly, but ignore him because if you run he will see you as a chase and want to attack. If you have to run because he is starting to attack you I would cover my face with my arms and tuck in a little, but kick him if to get him off you , also cry for help if anyone is nearby. It really depends on the size of the dog and if there is more than one or a pack, but if you are attacked by a dog your adrenaline will kick in and you will most likely find a good way to protect yourself. The best way to prevent dog attacks is to avoid looking stray dogs in the eye.

Don't make a big commotion. If you are near a tree or car, climb on top of it. If a house or building is near you, go inside. If the dog is foaming at the mouth, its MAD, in which case, get away! If ts wagging its tail happily while chasing you, it wants to play. In that case find a good place, stop and sit down and let it come to you. My aunt is a vet and knows things like this, so I know what all the signs are of a nice and mad dog! Hope I helped you out some!

Stop! Look big and yell out NO! Stare the dog down, super aggressive dogs may take the stare down as threat, but stand your ground and yell NO again. It has worked several times for me, but remember that you are dealing with an animal.

Dogs tend to chase, and bite more with people who run, yell, struggle and scream, it is an inate prey drive. A lot of people, especially children fall victim to pits and other dogs because they squeal and run. A dogs nature is to hold on and bite until the "prey" falls dead, or stops moving.

Stick with the firm loud NO!

You should never run from a dog. Dogs are alot faster than humans. Your best chance is to turn and face the dog. You can tell alot by the dogs body language as to what they will do. When a dog approches and is showing what appears to be aggretion and his hackles are up, what the dog is doing is trying to make himself look big and imposing. This is a sign of unsurity and fear by the dog. By doing this he is hoping to intimidate you in hopes that you will move away. DON'T!! Stand your ground and start to move towards him slowly with your arms out away from your side and wave them up and down and make alot of noise. This will make you look bigger and more threatening to the dog and he will be inclined to avoid you. The biggest mistake you can make is to turn your back and walk or run away. This will create prey drive in the dog and he will chase you because he will see that he has won and that you are scared of him. Now there are dogs out there that will act differently when showing serious aggretion. It is a myth that when a dog is wagging his tail that he is always friendly. When a dog is wagging his tail he is showing excitment. Now exitment can mean different things i.e Play ball, food, or just happy that your home for the day. Dogs also will wag their tails when they are showing serious aggretion. Dogs that are not serious or that are unsure when showing aggretion will hold their tails in a down or in a upright possition and will not usually be wagging it. Signs that will tell you that a dog is truly serious about biting you will sometimes put their hackles up when they first approch you but will quikly lower them or will not have them up at all. Their ears will be erect and forward. Dogs that are just trying to scare you and that are not serious will sometimes have their ears back. A serious dog will also hold his head high and give a deep rumbly bark and look you right in the eye. And will show teeth and will not back down when you move towards them.. Dogs that are not serious will hold their heads lower and will not look you in the eye and will sometimes look at you out of the side of their heads .The most important thing to remember if you are attacted by a dog is to stay calm and not to panic. By panicing you will only excite the dog more and it will make the dog's attack more ferociously.and will cause the dog to pull harder and thrash around causing further damage. If possible keep distance between you and the dog by kicking your feet at him as he comes in at you. DO NOT turn your back to him or run. Keep him in front of you. If the dog is succesfull in obtaining a bite on you and is holing on? Reach down and grab his collar and twist it like a turnican. Because when a dog gets excited they can't breath very good trough their nose. That's why they pant when excited. By twisting the collar it will restrict his air supply and he will eventually have to open his mouth to breath better. As soon as he releases his grip DO NOT! let go of his collar. Instead use it to force him to the ground and hold him there untill someone can come to help you. By holding on to the collar it will help you controll the dog's head and will help prevent the dog from re- biting you. If the dog is not wearing a collar and he tries to attack? Do the same think keep him in front of you and try to keep distance between you and the dog. If he does get a grip on you? Remamber to stay calm and don't panic. There are a few things you can do to deture the dog. Take your thumb and drive it into his eye, Grab an ear and twist, Or sometimes it works to punch him with a clinched fist directly on the end of his nose, Always drive him towards the ground as soon as he grips onto you. This give you controll of the dogs movement and the dog will not be able to pull and thrash. And alot of times by driving the dog to the ground it is enough to get the dog to release his grip

My husband had the gift of outdoing the dog. he would tell him in a firm loud angry voice to back off. He backed off two pitt bulls from himself and me after they became so aggressive that they broke the chains holding them. I was so weak in the knees because I knew in my heart that we were goners, but he calmly told me to walk backwards very slowly around the house and get into the truck. They did not follow me, and I was sure that he would be killed, but minutes later, he walked out and joinned me in the truck. He literally backed them off with his firm commands. He had never seen these dogs before, but he had this gift,. Since he has passed away I have already backed down a very ferosious larger dog just with my voice and stance. I do not think you should stare at them or look them in the eye. ABOVE ALL, DO NOT RUN FROM THEM. GET ANGRY AND STAND YOUR GROUND WITH THEM. I HAVE ALSO TURNED AROUND WHEN BEING APPROACHED BY AN AGRESSIVE DOG AND KEPT TURNING MY BODY AWAY FROM IT WHILE I YELLED " GET YOUR DOG" (THE OWNER NEVER HEARD ME) UNTIL HE LOST INTEREST AND WALKED AWAY, BUT THE LOUD COMMAND "COME GET YOUR DOG", IS PROBABLY WHAT MADE HIM WALK AWAY. TAKE CARE AND PRACTICE THIS WHEN YOU ARE ANGRY ABOUT SOMETHING. YOU CAN DO IT. GOD BLESS.

Stop- If you stop, the dog might stop and if it does, slowly walk away.

Command the dog to come- Say loudly, in a commanding voice, "Come here!" The might have mistaken you for its owner.

Squirt it- Squirt the dog and outrun it along the way.
