Watching TV does help. I tend to buy DVD's that are in multiple languages for that same reason. That particularly helps because you already know what's going on and you can catch the meaning of the words better.
Try spending some time immersing yourself in the language. Subscribe to a magazine in that language and actually read it. The more time you spend, and the more senses you immerse in that culture, the quicker you'll get it.

My family and I are learning American Sign Language and I have many friends who have or are learning spanish and we all agree that the ultimate way to learn a new language is to associate with those who speak that language as much as possible. If you can find a book on CD or tape in the language that you want to learn and then buy the book in english and follow along as well as you can with the recording you can pick out some of the words. Each time you listen to it your word bank will grow. Also use the words that you learn on a regular bases. Starting a note book of the words that you have learned is good also because then you can look back at the words that you have learned and quiz yourself to see if you still remember them.

Provided that you are doing a course, or have a tutor in the language you wish to learn, I found reading/singing along a song in that language did wonders for me.
Get the lyrics, get the track, listen to it, and sing along. By doing that you learn:
1. The pronunciation of words and phrases;
2. Slang and other idiomatic expressions;
3. Fluency (by stringing words together in sentences with rhythm and good timing)
4. Spelling.
5. You also learn to recognize phrases as they are uttered.
Re: TV Shows... Yup. They also help. But if you want to fine tune your listening skills, you should try listening to the radio in that language.
Good luck!

There are several different training styles and television programs is probably second on my list with the first being interacting with another person. I have been learning sign language for quite some time and the best way for me to learn was by practicing with someone else. Best of luck!!!

Yes it does help. I learned italian as an adult and watching italian movies and dramas helped me as far as being able to understand what they were saying when they were speaking it. You know how when your learning a language and the it seems that the native speaker is speaking too fast? Well movies help you get up to speed so when they are talking it seem that normal speed to you.

The ONLY way is to enroll in a good school or hire a good teacher, if native of the language, better. Practice, practice, and practice. About the shows, choose. Some shows have so much slang in the USA that instead of english, it is a dialect.
You should find one with basic language and few slang

Try the Pimsleur language cds (the comprehensive program, three levels of 30 lessons each). You may even be able to get them from your local library. It's a really good system. Expensive, though. Check out some of the reviews on Amazon.

Yes. But with regards to my experience, there is no better teacher than an exposure to the place where people speak the language. Then try to ask some kids to teach you their language. They are fun and most of them are very willing to teach you. Good luck. Merci!

on the grounds that younger youngsters are at an age in which they'll be trained essentially the most in lifestyles. This is whilst their brain is such a lot inclined. If you taught a four yr historic three unique languages, they'll be trained quicker then a 24 yr historic. I noticed a documentary on children's and their finding out competencies and feral youngsters
