I have been diagnosed with Bipolar I for over 20 years. I prefer not to use the word "worst," but the idea that it is more "severe" than Bipolar II is correct.

The difference between the two has to do with diagnostic criteria. In simple terms, the manic phase of Bipolar I is more intense than the manic phase of Bipolar II.

Not sure if one is 'worse' than the other necessarily.

The official difference is that bipolar 1 features full mania, whereas bipolar 2 has only hypomanic episodes. The difference between mania and hypomania is that mania is sufficiently severe to cause marked impairment in occupational functioning or in usual social activities or relationships with others, or necessitates hospitalization to prevent harm to self or others, or there are psychotic features.

Bipolar 1 generally cycles much slower than bipolar 2 as well.

Now FWIW, although I am ultra rapid cycling bipolar 2, I also have had psychotic episodes (though never been hospitalised). In other words, I don't fit either category properly.

Anyway, I'm not sure I'd wish my flavor on you, nor would I like your particular version, either. There are no prizes for having the worst version.

Bi Polar I is more serious as it can be more debilitating than Bipolar II. Both are responsive to medication, good self care ( especially regulated sleep!) and exercise.
Good luck!
