I just bought this puppy last week. He is 3 1/2 month old. A pure breed lhasa apso. My family and i wants to play with him. but he always sleeping. he only wakes up when its time to eat, pee & poo.. & if he wants to transfer from one place to another. He's not playful like other puppies that i've encountered. But he is affectionate specially when we're going to sleep at night he wants lay next to me. He has no teeth in front and gums, i don't know if it had fall out in his previous months or not. i haven't hear him bark yet. We already bring him to vet & gave him complete shots. His eating habits is normal as well as the vowel movement. I'm just worried about his behavior. Why he is always asleep? my friends told me its normal to be like that until he reaches 6 months old, because he is still growing, & they say Lhasa apsos are late bloomer. sounds true for me. but i'm still bothered. can you give some advice there guys? why is my puppy always asleep? is that really normal? HELP ME OUT

Where did you get him? Pet stores are not the best place to get pups. They tend to be sickly and badly bred. Call the pet store and ask where they got the pup. See if you can track down the breeder. Ask them if they have any problems with the pups. Check with animal control and the Better Business Bureau to see if they've had any reports about that breeder.
At this point, you can wait a week and see if he is going through a phase, and if he perks up any, but I wouldn't leave it longer than that. Puppies are generally rambunctious, I've never heard of "late bloomers" but I guess anything is possible.
The fact that he's sleepy combined with his toothlessness, makes me think that there is something wrong. Go back to the vet and get him de-wormed, another set of shots (puppies need boosters to be completely safe), and some blood work.
The blood work will tell you if all his organs are functioning correctly. Consider Xrays as well, they will show any defects he was born with.

Fear not your Lhasa Apso is fine. They can be very cat like ( sleeping all day). He might not be sleeping either; When I first got my lhasa I was worried too. He just wouldn't bark. So I started reading books on Lhaso Apsos. They are a Tibetian breed of dog cousins with the shi zu and tibetian terrier. Lhasas were originally bred to be alarm dogs. They spend nearly the first year of their lives just listening to their surrounding. Your voice the sound of your computer, dishwasher, washer and dryer, basically anything in your house. Around 1 year of age they start to bark or "alert" you to something they think doesn't sound right. At this point it is your job to let them know that the sound is okay or if they did a good job and the sound was not normal. Don't worry my best advice is to keep going on as normal play with him and love him he will become your best friend. I love my Lhaso Apso, Gimley ( as in gimli the dwarf from LOTR, he is an ankle biter).

I do not think this is normal..puppies are very active, especially when people are around. They do sleep alot, for they are growning very fast, but to be listless....nope...not right. Has the dog been de-wormed? Worms can suck a dog dry of energy quickly. I had a lhasa that was always on the move as a puppy. Very affedctionate...just could not house break the doggie...not the brightest breed known to mankind.

As long as you keep him current on his vaccinations and regular checkups with the vet, he'll probably be OK. Puppies do sleep a lot...just like babies.

On the other hand, if your puppy is so sleepy that he doesn't respond to you or play at all, get him to a doctor right away. You should also be concerned if he stops eating or drinking or vomits or has diarrhea. Small puppies can crash very quickly, so keep a close eye n him. You should also take care to feed him frequent meals since small puppies can have trouble with their blood sugar levels.

Ask your vet about giving the pup some nutracal. It is a supplement that helps with blood sugar and such. Especially in small breed dogs when they get stressed their blood sugar can drop causing them to be more lethargic; something called hypoglycemia. It can be serious if the sugar gets too low. I have a Bichonpoo and she is on nutrical. I have had her 2 weeks and she is full of energy.

A puppy cannot get all the vaccines they need in one visit. Has the dog been wormed????? I would have another visit to the vet. There can be something wrong.....like a heart condition...liver shunt...many other problems. Lashas that I have seen at that age are ALWAYS on the move. Something sounds wrong.
