I work at a music store and the guitars we sell the most for beginners are Yamaha and Harmonia. I bought a Harmonia myself because they have more color selections than Yahama. (I bought a red one.) I've had a few friends who are guitarists look at it and they say that except for the action being a little high, it is a pretty good guitar.

If you are just starting out it doesn't really matter what kind of acoustic guitar you get. I suggest a cheap First Act. It's not the best sounding but it will do until you get confident enough in your playing to buy a good guitar. When you get to that point I suggest a Takamine acoustic. They sound really good. Almost any site you purchase your guitar from would probably have some beginner kits. For me, when I first learned to play, I learned on an electric guitar. The strings were easier on my fingers.

First of all, I' d go to a guitar shop, a big one if you have one in your area.. and play a lot of different kinds of guitars..Just play the few basic chords perhaps "D" "A7th" and "G." Anyone there can show you how to play these three basic chords.
Get a sense of what feels best for you.. Nylon strings are easiest to push down, but steel strings have a nicer sound if you like bluegrass, or rock and roll music..
It's ten times easier to learn to play on a quality instrument than it is on a cheap one.. so perhaps you should consider renting a good instrument, as opposed to buying a cheap one.
It may sound funny, but you should also consider learning to play a Ukulele.. The chords are identical to a guitar in most instances and they are much easier to play.. You can chord, sing and enjoy a uke in much less learning time than a guitar, and once you've mastered it, the transition to a guitar is very easy. If you do do this, get a Tenor Uke, which is like a small guitar, and it sounds wonderful.
Martin is always the best brand in a Uke or Guitar, but a Gibson is great too.. I have an old Guild, and it has great tone..

If you want a good guitar to start out with, you could either go with a Fender or Ibanez. Ibanez is a little cheaper, but has the same quality, and is always a good starter. You can either go to a local music store, or you can go to www.musiciansfriend.com or www.music123.com. I wish you good luck with learning, you will not regret it.
