Uh, maybe because in many areas the only major funding a school system has is through property taxes. Of course we could always stop funding schools, and get a bunch more high level thinkers like you...

Vote to keep property taxes low when possible because you have a house payment and a adjustable mortgage not gonna take too kindly to increase in the property tax assessment. Local tax dollars in suburbs areas growing are wasted on building amenities that 20 years ago a suburb never had like a community center with a water slide park, and high schools with computers students hardly use, swimming pools in high schools, and even worse than that business moving in and some of them get thier property taxes tax free while other business pay. People vote for higher property should think about people living on fixed incomes on soical security, and the people that dont have kids in school so that when they do want increase taxes the money is spent wisely and in open manner.

Here in southern California, house prices are ridiculously high.
Part of the reason for this, I think, is that people are holding on to their houses so they can keep the low property tax rate they have. This keeps them from moving or selling, which restricts the supply of houses, keeping the costs too high.
Most people will vote to pay no taxes, ever, while also voting to constantly borrow money and keep spending money the government doesn't have. Anytime someone steps up and tries to get people to behave responsibly, their opponent runs an attack ad saying "so and so wants to raise your taxes".

Because if they don't keep raising money to run services like the police dept or fire dept then society will crumble. Look at the school system. Don't get me wrong, there is a lot, A LOT of corruption in goverment but whats the alternitive? Good people just won't run for office. We need to eliminate goverment waste and pork barrel spending on ALL levels of goverment.

There has to be some left-over money to give to the "Pork-dealers". Freezing taxing hurts those folks and is a political no-no>

Giving money away to the government?? Where do you live? My property taxes paid for my children's education, it pays for my neighbor's kids to go to school. It pays for my trash pickup. It helps pay for our firemen, our police and other emergency services. etc. Sorry, I don't give money away for nothing. I expect plenty in return.
