We are looking to adopt a small dog (under 15lbs). We live the south suburbs of Chicago. We are not too picky, we just don't want anything that yaps too much! We would love a young dog who is already somewhat trained. Any ideas???

Sorry, I should have clarified, we have been lookiing at shelters, but cannot seem to find a small dog, good with kids. I guess I was wondering if anyone knew of someone around my area who is selling or giving away a small dog!

Try looking at your local pound or shelter, or you could try looking on petfinders. Just type in your zip cod. There are lots of dogs that need a loving home. Good luck :-)

Why don't you consider rescuing a small dog from an animal shelter? The shelter may be able to give you some history on the dog including training. The good thing is that there will be many dogs to choose from and they all need homes.
But you will need to learn about training him yourself. There is nothing worse to live with than an untrained, uncontrollable dog - no matter what his size.
Take him to an obedience club in your area - It's fun! And they will show you how to teach him!
Some dogs are natural barkers - but most bark because they are bored. Your new dog will need attention (which includes training) and mental and physical exercise to keep him happy

Good luck. Start by learning the different characteristics in the breeds you have in mind.
I was amazed to find out that the smallest dogs have so many needs that I knew nothing about. Such as possible defects that can take a long time to showup..Sometimes the smaller the dog the more it yapps, but be ready to train the dog. Dachsunds are wonderful, and they do have a constant bark for many reasons, This is how they communicate with you. Whenever my dog barks excessively, it is for a reason. either something is going on, or he is just lonely for me to come out and play with him,. He barks to wake me up, and for anything that he really needs that I am not paying attention to at the time. If you are prepared to committ yourselves to a pet, you will be rewarded 100 fold. You will learn to tolerate and deal with all his habits, You will have the best friend you ever made, for life. They are worth it all, for what they give to you! Best wishes in finding the right dog!

We have two Shih-tzus. We had our first one for two years and loved her so much that we got a second. This breed doesn't yip like small terriers. They do bark at times, but nothing excessive. They love people and are wonderful lap dogs. Both of our dogs are under 15 lbs. and to this point are under 10lbs. Our first one was soooooooo easy to train and we had never trained a dog before. The second one has been more difficult, but we love her the same. We tried finding a small dog in a shelter as well, but after a year of looking off and on, we gave in and found a breeder. It cost us a lot more, but we are truly happy with our babies!!! Good luck to you!

I have 2 mini dachshunds and they are wonderful. They are under 15 lbs. and mine don't yap. I wouldn't say they are the easiest to train though. They are actually quite stubborn when it comes to training. They are prone to spine/back problems though. My 2 are 4 & 5 years and nothing yet. They do seem to have some problems with digesting their dog food though. I have had to switch them to a special diet. Dachshunds are delightful little companions. Good luck!

Figure out a breed that you like, and then contact a local rescue group. A city like Chicago should have every rescue group for every breed somewhere close by. I love Boston Terriers, but they are hyper.

I just got a Bichonpoo. She is 14 weeks old now. She is TERRIFIC. She is so cute. She is very smart, easily trainable. For a puppy she is remarkably well behaved and loves all animals and people. She doesn't shed and is hypoallergenic. She will require some grooming.

Go check out the Humane Society. They might have the perfect pooch for you. Another source is craigs list.
Check out the Corgi breed! They are fun!

Please, remember that these dogs are looking for a forever home. Some were someone's beloved pet, and for whatever reason were given up - some to 'free to loving homes' - only to find themselves taken by people who ran puppy mills.
What's the price of a puppy mill puppy? The life of it's parents!

Ask a local vet about local breeders. get to know the pups mom before you get a puppy. Puppies tend to share moms temperment. do your homework know what kind of dog your getting and what his role in your home will be.
