When the claxon makes it special noise and General Quarters is called for, you man your battle stations. Each sailor has a place to go. Some will go to gun positions, others will be in the position to get ammunition to the gunnery positions. Men will be stationed in the after steering (which is a small place toward the stern of the ship incase the wheel house gets hit), others will man sound powered phone (in my day and some still exist) and others will be on walkie talkie types of radios. Men will be in position to do damage control - to stop leaks if the ship takes a round where water can get in. Many will be inthe Engine room, or the hole as we called it, some will be in whereever the ship's medical facilities are.
Basically I can say that on my ship there were three times the number of men than it took to keep the ship underway. We had 90 men and therefore, there would be 30 different battle stations. However, on a Carrier, which has thousands of men, each will have a place to go and all must go.
As to how it was, how would y ou like to be in the middle of the water somewhere while some body is trying to sink your ship?

I am not sure what you mean by "Navy Battle Stations" -- in the Navy, "Battle Stations" refers to where you are supposed to be when the ship is going into battle. Some people will be manning weapons, some will be manning fire hoses, some will be manning radios, and so on.
If you can give me a more detailed description of what information you are looking for, I'll be glad to anwser it.

I think what you are referring to is the "Battle Stations" that are conducted at recruit training. I will tell you this, if you complete an enlistment in the military, I highly doubt it will be the hardest thing you will do. I won't give you a detailed description though, because the mystique is something that every recruit should experience.

What Mustela Frenata said. And it's bad. No smoking, ventilation and air conditioning is usually shut down, no moving around the ship so you can't go get a cup of coffee, have to be in your "battle dress" (pants tucked into your socks, collar buttoned, life jacket on). If the drill isn't over by dinner time, someone may bring around some C-Rats (MRIs today I'm sure).

oh boy...good old battle stations..i was horrified because i have never been a strong runner...they always told us that if you stop running, you fail...
lets see, i remember that we went to bed around 930pm...all the sudden alarms are going off, they are screaming BATTLE STATIONS...you gotta get your butt out of your rack and get dressed FAST...they give you 3 strikes before you fail...any small thing you do could give you a strike....i had one friend who didnt listen to details closely enough and messed up on something so small, that she got a strike...
well, everyone takes turns carrying a seabag with swimsuits and so on in them, my advice, is volunteer to take the seabag before you go to the swim station because after you swim, its going to be 10 times heavier...
throughout the whole ordeal, you are not allowed to sit on your butt, you have to "take a knee"...even doing that, you want to fall asleep...i remember kneeling and i about fell over because i was starting to fall asleep...they wont let you stand either, they want to see how far that they can push you....
i had to be cautious of drinking water, they constantly tell you to hydrate, but if you are like me and have to pee every five minutes, you need to limit yourself because you dont get to use the bathroom each time...we had one girl actually pee on herself because she couldnt hold it anymore...
the hardest station for me was the shooting...i am a horrible shooter..but in that station, they had sirens and lights going..it was very disorienting...
the final station you all do as a group is the fire one, i forget the real name....by the time you get there, its light out and you are all pumped up and you seem to have caught your second wind...as you get ready to run out of that station, everyone starts to make a mad dash for the finish, but remember as you come up to the doors, keep running unless they tell you to stop....
when you finish the stations, you put your gear back and you all line up in this room where they finally give you your NAVY cap...some of the strongest guys in our division actually broke down and cried when they got their hats because it all had been a long process...i even seen my Chief cry for us because she was so proud...
that morning you get the mess hall all to yourself...you actually get to eat as much as you want and go back for seconds...but that day, they just dont let you go back to the "SHIP" and sleep....i remember marching and actually fell asleep while walking and i crashed into my friend infront of me...it was the weirdest thing
battle stations is scarey when you first hear about it and it does scare you because if you fail it, you have to keep taking it until you pass...i didnt like the idea of running in my boots either but my feet were numb the next day...
you just have to remember to pay attention to every little detail, stay awake, keep up with the group, help out your shipments and keep running...
