A chiropractor can't help you. They deal with skeletal alignment and if you do see one, you will still be sore and still need soft tissue (like muscle) worked on. Chiropractors have done a good job with marketing themselves but I've found them to rarely be effective with long-term pain and they can't do anything about your muscle tension.
You need a massage therapist. They will spend more time with you and listen and be less expensive. Treatment is very pampering and feels better and is safer than drugs and chiropractic over-treatment.
A relaxation massage may be the best place to start. Don't do deep tissue until you've had a regular relaxation massage first.
Yoga and Thai Massage may keep your backache from returning. Gentle stretching can help too.
Your being tense can be from a change in your movement habits since you've been down a while. Drink plenty of water, since dehydration causes tense muscles and cramping too.

It is a vicious cycle. Stress and anxiety can definitely cause back pain. The muscles tensing is a sign your body and mind need to relax. A good massage might loosen up the muscles if they are tight, or you might want to start some kind of physical therapy. If you already have that tension and back pain, this then can lead to stress, because of the pain and discomfort it can cause. Back pain is one of the hardest ills to pin down. Good luck!

i had back pain for awhile that i just put up with. then i said to myself that i was too young to be suffering from back pain. when i went to my next gynecologist appt. i found out that i had a fibroid growth in my uterus. i had no idea something like this could be causing my back pain. i had to have it surgically removed. im not saying this is what you have, just that it could be numerous things. see a regular doctor, and a gynecologist. dont be so quick to go to a chiropractor as they provide only temporary relief.

I would definetly go see a chiropractor. I go to one on a regular basis. Try to find one that uses the "activator" method. I find it to be more helpful and gentle. When my back is hurting my body gets really tense and I get extremley moody. I dunno, everyone is different. I wouuld definetly suggest getting that checked out though. Good Luck!
