I am sorry for your loss.
Your question shows you have certain doubt regarding eternity. Where does one go after death? Does the destination differ for each believer? Your doubt has significant importance because it related to your brother - a very personal doubt and very understandable. Suicide leaves deeper mark than usual death and causes certain guilt of "why can't I avoid him to do it or why can't I see he needed help" to survivors more years after the happening.
First, I must say, if after I die then I go nowhere, I will be very upset - No need to live only to go nowhere after death, was I created out of coincidence? Don't I have any meaning living in this world? Even animal and plant created to give support for human life. Am I less than animal who live for nothing then become nothing to be nowhere?
Because I am a follower of Jesus Christ, let me quote some verses from Romans 2: 12 - 16 regarding people who don't know about Christ and never hear of Him and never reject Him:
"12All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law. 13For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God's sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous. 14(Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law, 15since they show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts now accusing, now even defending them.) 16This will take place on the day when God will judge men's secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares."
The verses explained that people who never heard of Jesus, never rejected Him but live according to the truth shall be judged by their own consciences.
So, where's your brother now? Don't worry about him, he's already be taken care of. Hell or heaven? I don't know, but he will be judged along with you and me and all human beings ever lived before Jesus Christ at Judgment Day.
The most important thing is you. Where do you want to go after death? That will determine your belief and your decision to run your life.
I don't want to preach you to be a follower of Jesus Christ. The decision is yours only.
Just remember this of Blaise Pascal wager:
"Believing in God is the most logical option available, because even if God doesn't exist and doesn't promise eternal life, the believer loses nothing in the end. But if a person gambles on the belief that God does not exist, there's much more to lose if in fact it turns out God does exist."
May you have the solace now. (And if not, you need to talk to some experts regarding you loss)

I'm so sorry. My 19-year-old half-brother committed suicide when I was six, and your post brings back a lot of hard memories. My heart goes out to you and your family.
I don't think that your brother's in Hell. I don't think that my brother's in Hell, either. I'm sorry that there aren't any simple answers to give you about where they are, but I do think that your brother's pain is over now. That's probably the most important thing, but I can sympathize with how much you miss him.
If I was God, all suicides would get a second chance. There's no way that I can prove it, but I do believe that there is someone or something out there, whether it's God or not, that is still trying to make sure that your brother gets the comfort and rest that he needs. Again, my heart really goes out to you and your family.
I know that none of this probably helps, and I'm sorry.

I am so sorry for you loss, may your pain be healed.
I do not know where he is and I can honestly say that no one does . I can give you my views on suicide and my experience.
I have tried suicide many times and I was a very devout Christian at the time. I believed that my faith in God and Jesus should be enough to keep me from wanting to die, but it was not. The threat of hell was not even enough for me to want to live. For me I could not imagine hell being much worse that what I was in.
I am now Wiccan and I no longer want to kill myself. The deterrent for me is the belief in reincarnation. We all reincarnate many times. We live each life to learn lessons we need to learn for whatever reason. If we commit suicide, then it is believed that we will reincarnate under the exact same circumstances we are trying to get away from.
Myself, I do not want to relive this mess again, so for me that was what I needed, but reincarnation is also a comfort even if we have to relieve the same conditions because is is still hope filled.
The hope is that we live the next life learning the lessons so we can move on toward the next better life or better yet on to the Summerland.

I am sorry about your loss, first of all. But that's a tough question to answer. He's not in Hell, because that place doesn't exist (regardless of what anyone says), so you don't have to worry about that. I'm a personal believer in the spirit, so my best advice is that he didn't "go" anywhere -- his soul, spirit, consciousness, energy, whatever you want to call it, is still very much around you. I'm sure many people would highly disagree with that analysis, but I do not believe death to be the end, and if you ask me, he really hasn't gone anywhere. Take care.
Edit: Also, don't listen to all these people telling you that he's in Hell because he didn't accept Christ or whatever. That's totally untrue and don't even think for a minute that it is. You don't have to worry about that.

The scriptures provide some good answers. 1st peter 4:1-3 states: 4:1Therefore since Christ suffered in the flesh, YOU too arm yourselves with the same mental disposition; because the person that has suffered in the flesh has desisted from sins, 4:2 to the end that he may live the remainder of [his] time in the flesh, no more for the desires of men, but for God’s will. 4:3 For the time that has passed by is sufficient for YOU to have worked out the will of the nations when YOU proceeded in deeds of loose conduct, lusts, excesses with wine, revelries, drinking matches, and illegal idolatries. That means that if one has come to have an accurate knowledge of the truth, he/she will certainly render an account to God rather he/she choses to obey or not. Again, let the scriptures answer this way. (Romans 14:12) . . .So, then, each of us will render an account for himself to God. To be frank, it is a dangerous thing for a True Christian to leave the truth. This is what the scriptures say about some one who choses such a course. (Proverbs 26:11) . . .Just like a dog returning to its vomit, the stupid one is repeating his foolishness. Not to say that we don't make many mistakes and sins, but if you actually know the truth, and become, as you put it, an unbeliever, your conscience will be marred until you attain to repentance. And another scripture to help us. (2 Peter 3:9) . . .Jehovah (compare Psalms 83:18 KJV) is not slow respecting his promise, as some people consider slowness, but he is patient with YOU because he does not desire any to be destroyed but desires all to attain to repentance.

That's hard to take even if he had dided of natural causes. I don't think his being an atheist will have any bearing on where he is right know.As the Creator made his soul along with all others. the best two thoughts are he either his soul went back to the Creator as a prodigal son and can stay their if he wants to or take a break and review his last life and any that came before that and decide if he wants to reincarnate or not.

The wages sin pays is death. When we die we are acquitted from our sin and sleep on in death until The Resurrection. Yes, that's right, we get another chance. Don't pay attention to those who condemn.
God is not like that. He is a loving God, our Creator Yahweh. Even though someone has commited murder,--of which suicide is murder of oneself,--they have the same chance as someone who has commited adultery or idolatry or bore false witness---etc. If you know your Ten Commandments then you can recognise the above mentioned sins of which All are deserving of death.
The First one though is most important,--- that Yahweh God is One God and we are NOT to put other gods between us and our Creator, Yahweh God. We are to Love Him and worship Only Him and He Will bless us.

I am deeply saddened by your question. Please accept my deepest sympathy. Your brother could be in Heaven or hell depending on his belief in Christ. You see suicide is not the unpardonable sin. He may have said he was an Athiest, but no one knows what his feelings were just before his life expired. Jesus is the one God that has taken all our sins on his shoulders by suffering and dying on the cross. Rising from the dead he beat death and sin. Our belief in him is our salvation. Suicide is a sin but not unpardonable. If with the last breath you honestly give your life to Christ you will be with him in heaven. Remember the thief on the cross that died with Jesus. He was told that, "On this day you( the thief) will be in paradise with me." Non belief is the key. If you reject Christ then he will turn his back on you. Pray hard, God will hear you. Ask him to send someone that will give you council and understanding. I am an Evangelical Free Christian. May God bless your lives! I will pray for you and your family from now on!

First of all, I'm very sorry to hear about your brother. My deepest condolences.
I believe wholeheartedly in reincarnation. We are in this life to learn lessons (at least that's what I believe), so when we don't learn a lesson in one life we come back to learn it in another. I do not believe your brother has been rejected by "God" or "Jesus" or that he hasn't gotten into heaven. I think he'll be sent back down to work out the issues that drove him to suicide.
Blessed be

I wish someone, anyone, here on earth could answer that question for you for sure. But no one really can because that is a decision reserved for God. He is God and He is in control.
We know that God has many qualities. We know He is a just God. We can have faith that He will always do what is right. We also know that God understands our heartaches because He sent His Son to earth to live as a man and experience the same problems and heartaches that your step brother experienced. We know that God is a compassionate God because of His love for all of us.
So, I don't think anyone can really answer this for you. But, hopefully you can sleep better knowing that God understands, that God is compassionate, and that God will always do what is right. I pray for your emotional and spirtitual healing.
