Try to locate a breed called a Rex, any variety of Rex is fine. They aren't necessarily cheap, but they don't shed. They are kind of funny looking. They have curly hair like a poodle. I think they're cute. All other cats shed, it's just a fact of life. Getting a short-haired variety will make the shedding seem less than if you have a long-haired variety, but they all shed. What you can do requires diligence. You must thoroughly brush the cat daily. If you collect the loose hair with a brush, not as much will wind up on the couch. You have to keep up with this, it's an on-going process, and will be worse in the spring and fall. That's when cats shed their coats and grow new ones in preparation for summer or winter. Even indoor cats do it. You should assume fur clean-up duties, too. You will have to regularly clean the hair off the furniture. Use the vacuum, a lint brush, sticky roller, rubber gloves, or one of those new Pledge Pet Hair Removers. Experiment to see what works best on your furniture's fabric. Don't think you can train the cat to stay off the furniture. You'd have better luck trying to stop the Mississippi river from flowing! Cats get on furniture and lounge where they please, you just have to accept it. Bear in mind, these are things you have to do every single day, 365 days a year, in addition to feeding, changing the water, and cleaning the litter box. Your parents will have to assume the vet bills. Cats need regular check-ups, shots and spaying, if that hasn't already been done. It isn't fair to expect them to do any more than that for a cat that you want. If you feel like you can honestly keep up with it, then fine. Get a cat. If you don't really feel like you have the time or initiative to do it every single day, maybe you should wait a while. Good luck!

I have seen cats who shed alot and I think some cats are more prone to shedding.

I have a few suggestions and I hope this helps!!
I am not sure how your cat would feel about a bath once a month!! I bathe my cats once a month and then when they are dry I brush their coats out. They are not thrilled with the bath but I am sure they feel better after they are all dried and brushed.
If bathing is something you are not comfortable with then my next suggestion is to consider what food you are feeding your cat. You may already be feeding a moderate to superior food. If not then I would suggest hitting a great pet store and ask the staff to help you to pick a food that is known to help with cats coats and shedding.
My last suggestion is something I am sure would be very helpful. I buy a product called Missing Link. It can be purchased online or at a good pet store. This product is available for cats and dogs. The feline formula comes in a 6 oz pkg and sells for about $20.00 It last along time and is loaded with lots of good things for your cat that you just sprinkle on their wet or dry food. Once people buy try this product on their pets they see a big change in their pets coats!!

Best of luck to you!
Hope this helps.

Keep your place just a few degrees cooler. That really cuts down on the shedding about 25%. Also, pardon my crudeness, but, I keep a curry brush by my toilet and as a routine habit, whenever I'm sitting there, I curry my cat. That does the trick almost 50%. Then, a once a week bath, followed by a full curry does another 10%. The remaining 15% simply winds up collected inside your sinuses forever. But, that's the price we pay for our pussycats.

My cat sheds too, I only vacuum every week though, not as much as you described your cat. I never bathe my cat again since she started coughing if I bathe her, so all I do is wipe her with pet wipes or damp cloth.

I shaved her once, about eight months ago. I actually used dog hair shaver since my cat is so fluffy. I didn't change her food to any "hairball management formula", but since the shaving, she didn't shed much anymore and it helped her reduce the amount of hairball that she licked everyday - which is good news for her digestion.

Maybe you can also change the cat's diet to "hairball management" formula, after you shaved it. If all else fails, the vet is the answer!

First, what does she eat. Poor quality diets contribute to increased shedding. Second, brushing helps a great deal. Many people do have their cats shaved to reduce household hair. (this really doesn't decrease the shedding, but the hairs are so short that you don't notice them as much)

I am a groomer and I shave cats all the time for this reason. It is really the only way to eliminate the shedding. Other ways might help, but not eliminate the problem.

When a cat sheds uncontrollably that means they have intestinal worms. You need to take your cat to the vet and have it examined and DE-wormed. Make sure you have your cat on a healthy diet. It is normal for them to shed a Little but not to the extent that you have described. I hope this helps.......Good luck.

you can't Animals shed twice a year. spring and fall. Once she is done with her fall shed, you will have some time off until spring. Just comb her regularly. And put a towel on the pillow when she is using it.

Its called a mans razor first spread shaving cream all over the cat then with gentle strokes run the razor down the the back and sides so it has short back and sides like the men in the army have.
Please take this as it was ment just a joke I needed a laugh you gave me one THANKS A MILLION...john
