I have to plead guilty to this one - will usually gently pat my dogs to settle them and give them I big cuddle if they startle awake. My fiancée picks on me for it, but hey - I love 'em to death.

Just because it's whimpering doesn't mean the dream is bad. It could be a good dream, but that is how the dog vocalizes it. You should likely leave it rest. Waking the dog up would shock it even more.

We all have dreams. The whimpering doesn't mean that it is having a bad dream. Really it is just like a person sleeping, so wake them up if you want, but it wont effect the dog either way.

A bad dream for a dog is the same as a bad dream for a human. But if me dog is having a bad dream I don't like to watch them go through that, however, there's no health issue here.

There is no reason to wake up a dreaming dog - even if it seems like its having a bad dream.

I don't think so. We don't always wake up from our bad dreams and we're fine. The dog will just get more cranky and confused it you wake it up.
Let sleeping dogs lie :)

No. When a dog is dreaming it is in REM sleep and you should not distrub this part of cycle in sleep ;) Oh yeah and the dog could be disoriented when he wakes up and bite you. Even if he has never bite anyone ever.

I usually do not wake up my dog. I just figure it's a dog thing.

my beagles have bad dreams and they start crying and stuff
i blow on there heads to wake them up
