I have two dogs, one larger and 11yo fem, one smaller and 13yo fem, the larger of the two attacks her without being provoked, they have been living together for over a year now without incident. The smaller of the two is losing her eyesight, does that play a factor?

Are you sure that that the larger is attacking? She may be playing and with the smaller not being able to see well, it could be frightening her.

If you are sure though - I can tell you that it is a dominance issue. Your 11month old is trying to tell the older dog that she is alpha female now - and she does this by forcing the older dog to submit to her and frequently.

The reason that they have not fought up to this point is that the younger dog was just a pup, and the older dog kept her in her place - but as she got bigger, she realized she could push the little one around more and more through rough play - but the older dog was still the leader until her sight began to fail. Your younger dog now thinks she needs to be the leader and is telling your older dog so.

The best way to stop the fighting is to show your younger dog that she is the leader - feed her first before the older dog, make a point to pat her first before you pat the older dog and so forth - most importantly is to make sure that while your young dog is the leader of your dogs, she is NOT the leader of you - next to you, she gets to be second in command.

You may worry that your older dog will be jealous - and truthfully, she may have a problem at first, but eventually she will settle into the role of follower. You may find that she seems more relaxed not that she doesn't have to be the leader anymore.

to start with, I could like to mention how horrible this have got to had been for you and that you simply could be saddened approximately this incident, Im certain you didnt feel this could occur, But because it did, there are a couple of disorders.. Firstly.. the husky is the dominant male puppy within the apartment, the person of the apartment is and must consistently be the alpha male... The terrier is a small puppy and being a dog could be a sort of prey for the husky.. Similar to a cat he could be... this could have prompted the husky's predatory instincts which could be extraordinary.. Seeing the westie consuming in his apartment, He could have questioned why he didn't get any first then cross on any left overs to the westie, He could have tousled then as you stated hit him together with his paws two times.. that was once the caution.... Being a husky he could have attempted to playfully nip him to exhibit who was once boss, however alternatively gave him a giant chomp... If you make a decision to carry the westie again, feed them in seperate rooms, additionally begin through bringing a few blankets from the vet that smells just like the westie and exhibit them to the husky to smell, Praise him and deliver him a deal with if he responds good... The male of the family must do that because it units a degree... When the westie comes residence have the male of the apartment maintain the husky, the girl introduce the westie once more, each puppies on leads and inside a secure distance from each and every different, Allow them to appear each and every different over.. If the husky is riled up and competitive, The male have got to scold the husky and be very dominant... Then enable the male to visit the westie and pat it, Play with it in complete view of the husky who must nonetheless be tied up.. The male must then return to the husky and enable him to smell the smell of the westie at the mans apparel, Give the husky a deal with if he responds good... This would possibly paintings, But should you desire to be remarkable certain in this hindrance, Go see a puppy instructor, Maybe the husky and wetsie will have to be informed in combination even as with 2 homeowners alternating turns..... I quite desire the little man will get higher.......

It may be a pain response. I would have both pets checked out with your veterinarian to see if they can pin point any painful parts. Other than that are these females intact (not spayed). Some times being in heat can bring about an aggressive nature that your dog may not otherwise exhibit.

It sounds like the lower dog is trying to raise her place in the pack. I had this problem with two of my dogs and I delt with it by reinforcing the higher dog's status. I fed the higher dog first, greeted the higher dog first, ect. When the lower one accepted her status and quit trying to rise, they got along again. Until then, I kept them seperated when I was not able to supervise.
