Hello

I was told today that I need to drink a glass of red wine a day to help my cholesterol. I am not one that drinks so I am not sure what I am even looking for in the store. Is Cabernet Sauvignon red wine? Please help and also if someone could please tell me what a good red wine is I would really appreaciate it! Because I have no idea what to buy.

Thanks
DJ

Red wine is wine that is red color, although it can be difficult to tell sometimes in the shop since they usually come in dark green bottles.

Cabernet Sauvignon is usually a red wine, although everynow and again you'll see a 'white' or blush (i.e. pink) cabernet.

You say you have been told to drink red wine. Is this medical advice from your doctor? If not I suggest you ask your doctor if he recommends red wine for cholesterol treatment.

There are many red wines, and most wine shops and supermarkets group them together by color, i.e all reds on one aisle and whites on another.

There are many many different red wines, popular ones include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, red Zinfandel. But if you are new to red wines it may take some time to find one style you like. Look out for the small one or two glass serving bottles often found in supermarkets and try them till you find one you like.

Also, a full bottle -- 750ml -- contains six glasses. So if you have only one glas a day, by the last glass that bottle will have been open 5 days and the wine maybe tasting not so good by then. Insert the cork as soon as you have poured the glass and put the bottle upright in the fridge till next day. Small bottles work out more expensive, but the wine will be fresher and taste better than a 5 day open bottle.

Alternatively, when you have found a wine you like, consider buying a 'wine in a box' -- comes in a cradboard box container with a tap. Its easy to pour one glass and it will keep better for 2-3 weeks.

All the best -- wine is a great tasting medicine :)

Good depends a lot on your taste. The Cabernet you mentioned is red and happens to be my favorite, but it is dry and dry wine is often an acquired taste. I didn't like it at all when I first tried it. You might do well to start with a sweeter wine, or at least something in the middle.

I would suggest that you try a few in different categories before you jump to conclusions about what you like and that may change as time goes on. It sure did for me.

Dry/sweet is the biggest thing to look at. Most people who like dry wine, like many different dry wines and the same goes for sweet. The guys who are into dry will usually look down on sweet wine, but that is really just being snobby.

You would probably have a little more luck talking to a store (or bar) that specializes in wine because they will have someone to answer your questions. They may even have tasting available so you can try a few things before you buy the whole bottle but that depends a lot on the laws in your area.

I would start with Merlot. Cabernet Sauvignon is little on heavy side. I personally like California wines, from Sonoma county or Napa valley. One of my favorite Cabernet Sauvignon is Kendall-Jackson.

Grapes and red wine contain photochemicals that appear to reduce the risk of heart disease. Studies show that moderate consumption of alcohol independently reduces heart disease and cancer risks. I’m not sure wether a controlled intake of red wine would reduce your risk for high cholesterol tho- sorry I could not be of more help. Although for what its worth I do recommend Modri Pinot (my favorite): It’s a first class wine, a rich, ruby red color, delicate, and an aroma of hazelnuts and walnuts. It is moderately rich in alcohol, with a balanced acidity and velvety, game-like flavor. Recommend with dark meats and duck.

Most beneficial to health is the Pinot Noir varietal, recognized for heart and anti-cancer benefits. Look for Pinot Noir from Oregon, B.C Canada and France. Although discovering the grape varietals in french wines is sometimes time consuming.

I was told the same as you, but I get a bit tiddly after one small glass, and I was told to drink two glasses, I can't handle it. If you want to help your cholesterol look no further than injesting 100% pure coconut oil. Please read up on the coconut oil and you will be surprised. Good luck.

I would get Pinot Noir, a lighter lesser chewy style full of charme and surprises... It also got the highest content of Reservatrol (great for your heart)
