I can not answer for what they do for priests, but I know that there are a lot more precautions being taken by the church as a whole. All Sunday school teachers, youth leaders, and others that will be in contact with other people's kids in a closed setting must have a background check and have to go through a class on how to recognize inappropriate situations and also pedophiles, and from what I have heard victim's testimonies and stories are told. It definitely places you in a shock for the rest of the day. The church really has radically changed its system of doing things. So I know many steps and precautions are being taken in the church's power to make sure no one is taken advantage of.

With the choice being between paedophiles and Women to fill the depleted ranks of clergy I suspect the turning of a blind eye policy will remain in place. Paedophilic behaviour will always be a problem whilst a celibacy is demanded of clergy, Where did Jesus Christ say "Neither fornicate nor marry Women neither men nor Children all those who truly believe and follow me" well I looked right through my Rough guide to the Bible and I did not find it. Let Priests marry, this would seriously reduce the problem. Like the veil , celibacy is nonsense dreamed up in flagrant disregard of the Commandment Thou Shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.

I dont know if a precaution can be taken ,but is un-natural to keep men as bachelors! All men in the Bible stories are married or have women, this bachelorism in the catholic church has to do with money.Men have natural sexual urges , and when not met I guess some will attempt to sastify it with the most vulnerable victims! the children whom the parents put in their trust!

There will always be sinners like there are traitors in a country .The fact that it goes undetected in certain religions like Islam is a cause for concern.Allowing priests to marry will not solve a problem;even married people have known to be paedophiles.

Be more rigourous in their selection procedures (hard I know since hardly anyone wants to join the priesthood these days!)

But it would still be impossible to weed out all paedophiles. More practical is that they should stop the paedophiles whom they KNOW to be within their own ranks, yet they do nothing about (apart from shift from one parish to another).

got to agree with aidamaria on this one, the catholic church needs to oepn its eyes and see reality and stop saying its priests must be "celibate". God supposedly preached "go forth and multiply" now how do they tie that up with celibacy, so they are in effect denying the teachings of god, and as aidamaria said, being only human the priests will find an outlet for their urges, be it a cleaning lady, another priest or a choirboy, whichever way, you can be sure its someone who wont reveal the priests habits so to speak. they will be a vulnerable person who the priest can befriend and take into his confidence etc. and the most vulnerable of all.......................yep you guessed it KIDS, so come on pope what you gonna do let your priests be MEN or keep them as a mouse, come on squeek up...............

People, looking to prey on young children, will find a way to do so, no matter what. Be it preists, preachers, youth ministers, school teachers, boy scout leaders, or even single men who date single women with kids. You cant keep them out of anywhere, they find their way in. Parents should be cautious, careful, and not be so trusting of people in authority, thats a good place to start.
