I WOULD GO TO A DEALER TO FIND OUT THE PACKAGE THE TRUCK WAS SET UP WITH FIRST .USUALLY THE TIRE SIZE BETWEEN 15 AND 16 WONT MATTER[ AS LONG AS THE DIAMETER OF THE TIRE STAYS THE SAME ].THE 15 INCH RIMMED TIRE WOULD HAVE A TALLER PROFILE LOOK DUE TO A SMALLER RIM FIT.WHERE AS A 16 INCH RIMMED TIRE WOULD HAVE A LOWER PROFILE DUE TO THE LARGER RIM FIT (BUT THE TWO TIRES CAN BE THE SAME HEIGHT MAKING NO DIFFERENCE TO THE SPEEDOMETER )
I HAVE FRIENDS THAT HAVE DODGE TRUCKS AND THEY SWAP TIRES BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN 16 INCHERS AND 17 INCHERS IT DOES NOT EFFECT THE SPEEDOMETER AS LONG AS THE TIRES YOU GO UP TO ARE NOT LARGER IN DIAMETER THAN ORIGINAL SPECK .
NOW IF YOU TOOK A TRUCK WITH 15INCH WHEELS STOCK SIZE TIRES AND WENT TO 16 INCH WHEELS AND LARGER DIAMETER TIRES THAN THE ORIGINALS YOUR SPEEDO WOULD BE OFF .BECAUSE AT THAT POINT YOU HAVE WENT BEYOND THE SPEC'S OF THE TRUCK (HENCE THE REASON TO CHECK WITH THE DEALER FOR SURE ) GOOD LUCK TO YOU

RE:
I recently bought a 2002 Dodge Dakota 4X4 Clubcab, and it needs tires.?
The plate inside the door gives the size as 235/75/R15. The tires on the truck are 245/70/R16, and the spare is 265/70R16. I understand that there is an optional upgrade on this model to 16 inch wheels. If that is the case for this truck, wouldn't it be indicated on the door plate? Or did...

Somebody might have. Maybe even the dealer did it as a 'perk' to the buyer, on a truck that wasn't originally equipped with them. Either way, it looks like you'll be buying 16" tires, preferably 235*70, 245*65, 235*70 or something else giving you 163.6mm of sidewall, otherwise your speedometer/odometer will be wrong, and your fuel economy may suffer (or benefit).

if the tires on the truck now work well, but are wearing out and need replacing, may I suggest getting the new tires with the same dimentions.
Another thing you can do is ask a mechanic or tire person that you trust, and see what they think.
depending on the clearences on the trusk, 16 inch tires may clear and not be a problem. the dimensions on the door plate, are what the vehicle maker, recomends for good fuel milage, and soeedometer accuracy

I think 16 inch is standard on the 4x4 and 15 inch for the 2 wheel drive models. Can't say about the door plate though..

BF Goodrich All Terrain Tires (A/T). I put some on my truck, Isuzu Rodeo 4x4, and they work great. They don't whine, like on Mud Terrains or Boggers. They are good on road and really good off road, they cost a shiny penny, but you get what you pay for. They are dual purpose and suit my lifestyle just fine. They look really good to.
