The triangle is a well used device in the composition of many paintings. It is known as the pyramid and is a means of organising the work. The pyramid shape usually rises from the two bottom corners of the work and in many instances is used with a frieze so as to widen visual scope of the work.

If you look at Nicolas Poussin's The Judgement of Solomon you will see that Solomon's head is at the apex of the triangle while the two pleading women fall within its lower sections. This is the pyramid or triangle. If you then imagine a horizontal line drawn across the painting on a level with Solomon's feet, this is known as the frieze, a compositional element which allows the organisation of the other depicted subjects.

A triangle would be used in the composition of a painting or drawing. It creates visual interest. To create the visual interest you would place the tallest object at the back and then spread the other objects across the foreground. Think of a bottle of wine on a table and then have two wine glasses in the painting. The bottle would be in the back and then place the two glasses in front to create a triangle.
