For two different scenarios:
1. The girl and I are very good friends, and there are definitely several other boys who'd be interested in taking her, some she'd turn down, others she may or may not.
2. A different girl I know pretty well, and there's probably not very many boys who'd ask her, though I don't want to ask so early that she thinks I'm thinking of more than staying just friends.

you like this girl and you're going to wait 6 months to take her out? you could probably increase your chances if you took her to the christmas dance, Basketball game, valentines date - catch my drift?

Alright. For #1, I would suggest that if there are other guys going to ask her to prom, then I would get a jump on asking her first then. But you could at least show her that your somewhat interested before you ask.
For #2, if she just wants to stay friends, then stay friends. Things could change a little later. And if not many boys are going to ask her out, then ask her. In truth, I think your better off asking this girl out than the first one. She seems like the popular type that would leave you hanging later and go for other popular types. I know it sounds ridiculous but it happens. I would say you have a better chance with the girl who you think isnt going to be asked out because then that makes her feel really good that someone was interested in her.
But all in all, just remember: You will never know the answer until you ask her. Whats the worst thing that could happen? And who cares what others think. It just shows that your a more open guy and that you have balls unlike they do.

Well ask #1 about maybe a week after the anouncements or more but make sure its not to late.
for #2 do the same though i would suggest to have options on some girls just in case you ask someone and they arent free, you would know that you can always ask this other girl you had your eye on or something other than the girl you had turned down =) and if all else fails, mingle at the prom, you never know when people may change their minds on some people ;-)

First of all you are making an ASSumption about something that you don't know positively would happen, that is asking a girl out beleiving she thinks it is going to mean more. That sounds pretty egotistical to me. Like you're such a catch that she couldn't HELP but want something more right?
The first one sounds like you want a guarantee that this girl is going to say yes to your asking. Sorry there are NO guarantees when asking anyone out If you don't ask her to the prom then you KNOW she won't be going with you.

I would say ask at least 2 months before your prom, that way you'll hopefully be ahead of the other guys, and if she says no then you have time to find another date, prom is a big deal to most girls...its usually never too early. Good luck

talk to her and ask her if she is going to the prom and if she is ask with who? then you only have one to worry about--also you must ask early enough so she can start getting her dress or things ready. just in conversation ask them if they are or are not going or if they have been invited or if they have someone in mind, and go from there.

ask her early enough so she has time to buy a dress, etc, but not so early that you look desperate. maybe a month and a half before the dance?
