5 inches, page one of the first book would be on the right, which means he would only eat the first book's cover for 1/6 inch, then the 2nd and 3rd books give 4 inches plus 4 covers for a total of 4 4/6 inches, then the last page of the fourth book would be right after the fourth book's cover so he'd only be eating the last book's cover for one more 1/6 inch.

The thickness of 4 books(only pages) = 4 x 2
= 8 inches
The bookworm only ate from the first page of the first book to the last page of the fourth book, leaving behind 2 cover sides.
There are 8 cover sides but the bookworm ate 6. So,
Thickness of covers eaten= 6 x 1/6
= 1 inch
Total inches eaten= 8 + 1
= 9 inches
