16Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ,[b] the Son of the living God."
17Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven.
First we need to understand what Jesus was looking for, "Who do you say I am?" Peter answer was correct; the Christ, the Son of the living God, sooooooo... Jesus was stating that upon this rock, or in modern day terms upon this confession He will build His church (Jesus the Son of God being the chief cornerstone of the church) He also said "for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven". It was a Revelation that simply put was reveled to Peter by God, and not himself
other passages make clear that Jesus Himself is the foundation. The chief cornerstone was the foundational stone in ancient architecture, from which all measurements began, so every other stone was laid in relationship to the cornerstone. Clearly this position belongs to Jesus.

Literally, to Peter, Thou are Peter (Cephus, a small stone), and upon this rock (referring to Himself, Jesus would build His own Church.
In the next verse, Peter was given the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven, but he was not given the keys to the church.
Peter enjoyed the privilege of being a stone in the foundation of the church. Peter, James, and John were considered (in Acts) to be the pillars of the church. Revelation reveals 12 foundation stones in New Jerusalem, one for each of the Apostles.
Peter is a foundation stone.
Jesus is the bed-rock upon which the foundation stones are lain.

Thou art Peter; upon this rock-(Jesus had been asking about who people say that HE was so He is refering to Himself here) and the gates of hell would not prevail against Him (Jesus) This was fulfilled when Jesus rose from the dead.

John 7:37-38 (NLT) Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds, "every person who's thirsty could come to me! every person who believes in me could come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, 'Rivers of residing water will bypass from his coronary heart'".* (while he suggested "residing water", he replaced into speaking of the Spirit, who might take transport of to all of us believing in him. however the Spirit had no longer yet been given,* because of the fact Jesus had no longer yet entered into his glory). Make experience now? many human beings declare that the King James version of the Bible is greater precise than the different variations, such because of the fact the recent international version or the recent residing Translation (which i've got used as an occasion), regardless of if, the KJV version is the main complicated of each and every of the variations and extremely confusing to understand. The greater moderen variations are a lot greater complete. information God's be conscious is what concerns besides.

depends on wether you believe peter to be the first pope.
when clearly the first pope is jesus
he was on this occasion addressing peter ,in a humourous tone addressing him as the little roch for hearing gods voice make a revelation to him in real time that jesus bore the christ spirit
some thing jesus did not reveal ,but the holy spirit did
this holy spirit is the big rock on which the church of god ,the father would rest the true rock of stumbling
jesus wanted no church ,his indeed gods throne lies within the heart
but if the christ spirit trully lies upon peter the body of christ belief needs a head
this will in gods time be revealed bu the deeds of the head ,who the true rock the father ,jesus as a pebble is yet a stumble stone ,and a corner stone and the little pebble who knows
in god we trust ,stop fighting about whos the boss
jesus said he that serves is your leader
when are our leaders going to serve
who is serving by his deeds to day ,by thier deeds of service to the flock ,who thus reveals the holy spirit is upon him ,him the gates of hell will not prevail against
oh peter why have you forsaken he in thee
not once but 3 times berfore the cock crows
stop fighting about whos leader seek the server who serves all ti live ,god who gives even the least life

He was just telling Peter that he wanted him to start his ministry and spread the gospels and thus begin forming the Christian Church. Althought Jesus' disciples were'nt yet called christians. Also, it was a play on words of JC's part, since Peter's name is Greek was Petros, which means "rock." So it was a sort of double entendre: Peter was to be the cornerstone: to carry the analogy a step further! And the church that he would build would not be stopped or hindered by anyone.

Sounds like he intended to put old Pete in charge. Oddly Pete got pushed out by the so-called apostle Paul who never even met Jesus.
The catholic church liked Paul's version of Christianity so much better than Jesus, and peters, That they replaced the real thing with Paul's made up version when they put the bible together.
The Christians have been following this nonsense version that trumped the true message of Jesus ever since.
Sad but true.
Love and blessings Don

The word of God as He intended it to be cannot contradict its self, Peter and Paul are the instruments that God had used to reach everyone of us same as He'd used Abrahams in his time and Moses in his time as well. God had really good reasons while using every single person throughout history.
