The was definitly communication between primates of the same group by soulds and signs. The fact that humans have the capacity for language comes from our primate ancestors.
Before attempts to commit language to a written form, there were almost certainly spoken languages which might have been comprehensible to other tribal groups outside the original language group(s).
Modern anthropological evidence suggests diverse origins rather than a single language which then 'splintered' into sub-languages and dialects. I.e. the opposite of Babel.
Modern language evidence also suggests contact between varied languages leads to the creation of new ones, such as the contact between Old German and the Norman language leading to the hybrid which became the core of English.
Either way, the language(s) used in earlier times (proto-languages) have all been lost but the evidence of them survives today in our written and spoken communication.

Caveman speak! Grunt! Groan! Uhh uhh! Really? How can one know, before recorded history? I think the furthest we can go back is possibly Sanscrit.

Also, thank you much for answering the question. there was no email or IM link to your profile. So, I figured I would put it here. I totally agree with you on the spirit world thing. I would very much like to know more about that. I really do think you're right. I've had experiences that concurr with that, to an extent. I'll tell you about them if you are curious. It was when my baby was first taken away.

Nobody really knows what language was spoken before the tower of babel. All we know is that after that day, everybody spoke different languages.
