From Matthew Henry's Consice Commentary on the Whole Bible concerning Matthew 16:12-20

"Verses 13-20 Peter, for himself and his brethren, said that they were assured of our Lord's being the promised Messiah, the Son of the living God. This showed that they believed Jesus to be more than man. Our Lord declared Peter to be blessed, as the teaching of God made him differ from his unbelieving countrymen. Christ added that he had named him Peter, in allusion to his stability or firmness in professing the truth. The word translated "rock," is not the same word as Peter, but is of a similar meaning. Nothing can be more wrong than to suppose that Christ meant the person of Peter was the rock. Without doubt Christ himself is the Rock, the tried foundation of the church; and woe to him that attempts to lay any other! Peter's confession is this rock as to doctrine. If Jesus be not the Christ, those that own him are not of the church, but deceivers and deceived. Our Lord next declared the authority with which Peter would be invested. He spoke in the name of his brethren, and this related to them as well as to him. They had no certain knowledge of the characters of men, and were liable to mistakes and sins in their own conduct; but they were kept from error in stating the way of acceptance and salvation, the rule of obedience, the believer's character and experience, and the final doom of unbelievers and hypocrites. In such matters their decision was right, and it was confirmed in heaven. But all pretensions of any man, either to absolve or retain men's sins, are blasphemous and absurd. None can forgive sins but God only. And this binding and loosing, in the common language of the Jews, signified to forbid and to allow, or to teach what is lawful or unlawful. "

If you read that entire section, you will see that when Jesus was asked "who do you I say I am", Peter answered, "Thou art the Christ, the son of the Living God." Jesus said, "Flesh and blood has not revealed this to you..."

The rock that He was building the church (us) upon was the revelation of Him being the Christ. This is what we (the church) are founded by. Think about how we receive Christ and are born again - when we confess that He is the Son of God, that He died for our sins, etc. The gates of hell shall not prevail against the knowledge of who Jesus is.

Isn't this wonderful news! When we know Jesus, who He is, what He did for us, and what He's doing for us right now, hell cannot win! Praise the Lord!

John 7:37-38 (NLT) Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds, "Anyone who's thirsty might come to me! Anyone who believes in me might come and drink! For the Scriptures claim, 'Rivers of residing water will go with the flow from his center'".* (When he mentioned "residing water", he was once speakme of the Spirit, who could receive to every body believing in him. But the Spirit had no longer but been given,* considering the fact that Jesus had no longer but entered into his glory). Make feel now? Many men and women declare that the King James Version of the Bible is extra correct than the opposite models, such because the New International Version or the New Living Translation (which I've used as an instance), nevertheless, the KJV variant is probably the most complex of the entire models and really complicated to fully grasp. The more moderen models are way more complete. Understanding God's Word is what issues besides.

It's been a while, but I believe that this is where he re-names Simon as Peter and JC is telling Simon-Peter that he is the foundation of the new faith. and that the new faith will be stronger than the forces of evil.

Peter is often translated as the Rock, but we must also realize that Pater, Padre, etc. are all linguistic variations on Father, and in a patriarchal society the father is the foundation of that society, so it is possible that 'peter as rock' is a mistranslation using Rock instead of foundation.

I think He means that He would set up His church using Peter. Peter was a great missionary and won many people to Christ.

That he is talking to Peter and is telling him that he will build his church on this spot of land. And once built nothing will be able to tear it down.

I guess because Jesus loved and respected him, he called him ''The Rock'' a kind of nickname, because that was what he was, a rock, solid and dependable, but, didn't he then go on to deny Jesus? Three times??? So, what does it all mean?
