When you are inside take it off. Not much simpler than that.
Unless they serve a purpose such as shade, protection or keeping warm they are useless. Why bother wearing it sideways, backwards or upside down ? It only makes you look like a ridiculous dimwitted fool !!!!!!

Generally, hats indoors are considered bad etiquette.
There are probably partial exceptions: For example, if its Winter and someone is walking in a shopping mall or else has entered a building and is walking in its halls but hasn't reached the office/room he's headed for, a hat may be ok temporarily. It probably depends on how much the hall is used or whether it would almost translate to still being outside (as in the case of a mall, sort of).
Houses, places of business other than retail business, schools, and other government buildings - no hats. In other words, places where some level of decorum can be expected.
Retail places like malls, are less formal. So are indoor sporting events. Maybe even movies. I think there's a little more flexibility when it comes to etiquette in places where the person is a "customer" rather than a "client", a "student", a "citizen" or a "resident".
Aside from that, though, and not according to any particular rules of etiquette, people who wear hats indoors look like they're stupid or else they look like their "hat-image" is so important to them they must hang onto the stupid hat no matter where they go, because if they take it off their image will be gone.
Baseball hats on anyone who over 14 years old and isn't playing baseball make the wearer look like he never grew past his eight-year-old mentality.
Stocking caps look stupid if the weather is above 35 degrees.
Cowboy hats on people who aren't cowboys or performing on stage, and "pimp hats" on anyone who isn't performing on Broadway, are "fashion don'ts.

I feel that way to many young men are not taught these rules and even older men are not gentlemen anymore. For me personally, being the mother of four sons, they have been taught to remove their hats in all public buildings, at the table, inside the home etc. This is only proper and mannerable. In my own personal opinion. God bless

on my side of the universe - almost NO hats at all. It's much too hot and humid here. People may wear them outdoors for sunrays protection only. Never seen a local wearing a hat indoors.

Wear it straight, not to the side. If you go in a home, take it off. If you are at a table eating, take it off.
