Hi all

I am in the market for a digital camera. I am looking for one that is not overly pricey (middle range), compact, and easy to use (I'm not the most technologically advanced consumer!)

Any suggestions for a quality camera for a first timer?

Thanks so much for your input in advance

Yes, don't get a Nikon P2 Coolpix! I have been told it's a great camera but after trying to read the manual (that has more pages than the bible) and going on every web site and message board and calling Nikon, well, if I could, I'd see the darn thing and get another kind of camera all together.
Outdoors it takes great pictures. Indoors - well - it just plain sucks!
Dark, dark, dark pictures - you have to stand 3 feet away from the subject to get a good shot. Then if you try to do one of their "settings" well they don't fit every situation and besides who wants to be looking for the right setting - by that time the "Kodak moment" has passed.
I do not like this camera and I have had it for nearly 1 year! I have over 16,000 pictures on my iPhoto so I take a lot of photos and consider myself rather well versed in digital but after trying everything I know how to do with this camera, I'd rather go back to film - oh my gosh did I just say that?! Wow! I really don't like this camera.
I hope this helps - sorry I rambled.
Good luck!

Go to the big box store or a retailer and play with a few to see how they feel to you. All the major camera manufacturers make a decent digicam that will perform well providing you read the manual and use a bit of care. Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Fuji and Sony all make a nice camera, many are surprisingly affordable.
Go to www.dpreview.com to compare different models side by side and see what features they offer.
Good luck!

The Nikon Coolpix camera is medium in price and pretty good in quality. It is fairly compact and I found it to be very easy to use.

I'd get a Canon Powershot A430. http://www.steves-digicams.com/best_cameras.html mentions this in the "entry level" recommendations and you can go their to read the review and see why.
