well some says that martial arts are for asians who are smaller build or size..to defend themself....but ppl like arnold schwarzenneger,stallone...etc dont need it except basic common sense in defending....that is why..even in a competition we have heavyweight,lightweights,middleweight...etc..category...giving chance for a smaller person to compete fairly...cause if its mixed up...then definitely the bigger and stronger opponent are most likely to win...well should try martial fighting against a street hooligans in all out fighting mode...

It ultimately depends on what martial art you are talking about. As the other guy mentioned, some martial arts have been invented to counter different organizations or different styles at different points in history, which might render these particular styles innefective in todays street situations.
The truth is that there are many fake *** artists out there today and this probably makes up for about 75% of "martial artists" today. Some arts are mostly meant for demonstration and if you find yourself trying to apply your demonstration technique in a life or death street situation, you might find yourself dead pretty fast.
One of the things a REAL art will provide is incredibly strong concentration and it will help you to keep your cool in a deadly situation. Strong phsycology and negotion skills can give you a serious advantage over your average thug, thus opening the gaps, and letting you get inside to drop a bomb. I dont recommend trying it like they do in the movies and attempting to dodge bullets; you need to be practical. The best way to dodge a bullet is to not even be in the situation in the first place. Be intuitive and you need to develop neurologically and keep your senses sharp as a razor blade. Mental techniques like this help you pick apart certain situations and completely avoid them all together, like a ninja.
As far as efficiency goes? You need to use the given situation as your technique. Theres absolutely nothing pre-determined in a fighting situation, regardless of what your phony instructor might tell you. You need to understand the evolution of martial art and that it does involve more weapons than it did during times when the art may have been invented. Shotokan Karate was invented by the Japanese simply because they didnt have any weapons, and they needed to turn their bodies into lethal instruments.
Some say that if you are 1 guy that destroys 6 thugs on the street, that you are "lucky". For the average phony martial artist, that might be true. But for a master mind that doesnt even need the title of "master" to begin with, he may have it all calculated from the beginning.
Is martial art effective on the street? Its extremely effective, provided that you know a REAL art. The mixed martial artists in the UFC are not necessarily real Martial Artists. Most of them are only interested in destroying others for their own satisfaction. During their game, in the cage, they have the advantage. Obviously they can apply what they know to a real fight. But on the streets, a complete fighter always has the advantage.
What is a complete fighter? Think of the evolution of combat without limit. No boundaries. Wouldnt this involve weapons?

Well you have a certain athletic potential which impacts the outcome of a fight. However for any given person training is only going to make you a better fighter. I guess what I'm going to say is just because you train in martial arts doesn't mean you will win all street fights but it certainly improves your odds.

As far as dirty fighting the MMA guys could do that in a real life or death fight so I don't understand the point.

It depends on the style you practice and the person/people you are defending yourself against. Practicing martial arts will make you fit, strong and improve your reaction speed etc although most of the techniques you learn doing martial arts will be useless in a street fight. Blocking and countering etc are a waste of time. If you get into a bad situation or feel threatened then hit first. Finish the fight in the first 3 seconds. If not, then there is no shame in running away.

Well, I don't know, I haven't gotten into a fight in a really long time and I take Taekwondo. On the other hand, I've never lost a fight either. The thing you have to remember is to not try and use all of the pretty kicks and stuff that you learned. A Martial Art is an ART. It's not something that you just go out and beat someone up with, it's self defense. Even without it, you can be a good fighter. But, I've learned how to teach my body great reflexes and to watch my opponent instead of just jumping in and hitting them.

If you're on the street and someone is trying to fight you, no, don't start jumping up in the air and kicking at them, lol. You need to mix your art with basic fighting. If you just use the basic art, the there is going to be at least one way for the opponent to get around what you're doing and just knock you out cold.

So, basically, it's not the art it's how the person uses it. I can defend myself really well, even without Taekwondo, but I still enjoy taking it. It teaches you ways to break peoples bones. =) Lol.

It's for sure different from street fights, but I guess knowing martial arts with its rules is still better than knowing nothing & getting an a** kicked on the street :)

It depends on the style. Some martial arts were used for countering brutality that existed in unorganized fighting styles. Yet normally, a guy who knows nothing of martial arts, but packs heat, a knife, or something else as a weapon typicaly has the advanatage. Otherwise, a good fist fighter could get the upperhand on a martial artist... All depends on the people.

Martial arts are WERY effective in real combat but only if you are extremely good in that martial art and play that martial art for a very long time, than and only than you can do some thing with it. In any other situation is not effective.

Dude what do you think UFC, Pride, and Mixed Martial Arts in general is?!? (you might wanna sit down for this because it may just come as a shock to ya pal)

ding, ding, ding, Martial Arts for double jeopardy Mr. Trebek.

and I gotta agree with Kveldorgonlier, you're confusing a sport and I reiterate what he said the competitors are fighting "IN A CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT" with rules and limitations, rather than just all out brawling. as opposed to a street fight where there're no rules at all, just how fast you can end the fight.

You do what you gotta do to come away from an encounter in the street, whether it's using dirty fighting, boxing or Martial Arts.

and as Saint said, knowin' somethin's better than not knowin what to do in the situation and going into a total panic where you're s**tin' your tighty whities because you don't know if you're gonna wind up a smear stain on the concrete or come away with a few bruises or slight injuries.

I know that I can't count the times that using my Martial Arts knowledge has saved my a**, against all kinds of people people twice my size and weight, faster, drunk, gacked out of their minds from drug use and so forth and so on.

It all comes back to knowin what you're doin when it comes down to protectin yourself, your family or friends. and that's what you train for so you don't have to think about it and do it because it's second nature.

it's not the Martial Arts discipline that makes the difference, or Martial Arts in general that causes the individual to lose whether it's in competiton (like UFC) or in a real fight. it's just because they either didn't know how to use the techniques they learned PROPERLY, or had a bad strategy against their opponent(s).

Hahahaha your nearly as funny as me.of course martial arts is no good thats why so many people do it.thats why so many people have avoided death and injury defending themselves with it.no rules is right but just remember a lot of martial artists know a lot more stuff that they can apply the no rules rule to.and there usually much faster at using them.pretty sure my dojo wouldn't be the ony one whos no.1 rule is there are no rules.good martial artists dont get in street fights anyway you attack them they do what they have to do at the time,or some even use it in the ring.PS>weight divisions are also in a controlled atmosphere with rules and a referee to enforce them thats fighting not self defence.

In chinese Martial art, learner need to start from foundation, inorder to build up your strenght, flexible, reaction and etc...
Thus, with martial art background, the punch will be much more lethal than people without in a real street fight.
