one (major) difference between mac and windows desktops is the file system running underneath the operating systems.

windows uses the NTFS (or *occasionally* fat32) filesystem:

and mac computers use the HFS filesystem:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hierarchical_File_System

read the above and get a vague understanding about the difference then repeat it - it's a bit more in-depth than 'apple has an apple and windows has a start button' - you'll sound like a professional lmao

A Windows desktop typically has a START button in the lower left corner. But a Mac has the Apple symbol in the upper left corner, that serves about the same purpose. Both of them bring up a menu that has an entry for shutting the system down, among several other things.

Macintosh desktops come with an operating system written by Apple, and a fair amount of software written by Apple. This is fairly unique these days, most companies make operating systems(OS), or hardware, or software. Apple can test fairly extensively with every piece of hardware that their OS runs on, which makes it easier to make sure the OS is extremely reliable.

There really isn't any such thing as a "windows desktop". There are many companies which sell desktops with Windows installed, but Microsoft doesn't manufacture desktops. When Microsoft designs an operating system, they can't possibly do extensive testing with every piece of hardware used with Windows.

It is possible to install Windows onto the computers which Apple has been making recently.

The windows desktop uses a taskbar to depict the open programs. Mac uses a "dock" which holds icons of all the programs you have open.
Also, the PC has a start button in the bottom left corner. Mac has an apple.

Well you just need to have seen both a single time to answer that but anyways, here's one:
- On a Mac the disk drives are shown directly on the desktop whereas you have to go through the My Computer icon on Windows.
